Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) held a workshop on Structured Clinical Assessment (SCA) at Shaheed Dr. Milton Hall on Monday, December 29, 2025.  Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, delivered a valuable speech as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the workshop. In his speech, he emphasized on providing more quality education in higher medical education programs and commented that we should not lag behind in medicine or medical education and move forward in line with the developed world by accepting challenges. He also mentioned that the need for higher medical education is essential and the demand of the time. 65 dermatologist teachers and doctors from various medical educational institutions of the country including BMU participated in this workshop organized by the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases of BMU.

In this important workshop, BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Haolder, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam spoke. BMU’s Chairman of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Professor Dr. Muhammad Munir Rashid, delivered the welcome speech. Dean of the Faculty of Medical Technology, Dermatologist Professor Dr. M. Abu Hena Chowdhury delivered the vote of thanks. Dermatologist Professor Dr. Md. Abdal Mia delivered the lecture as the main resource person and Assistant Professor of Medical Education of the Department of Public Health and Informatics, Dr. Md. Russell Ahmed Khan delivered the lecture as the resource person. The workshop included presentation of the philosophy of SCA, group work and practical demonstration of SCA, group presentations, wrap-up sessions, etc. This will further strengthen the ongoing efforts of BMU to improve the quality of education, modernize the evaluation system and produce international standard experts, as well as to provide high-quality postgraduate medical education and skilled experts. In this important workshop on SCA, teachers and doctors have been trained to enhance clinical skills, decision-making ability and ensure quality education, which is a reflection of BMU’s commitment to sustainable development of healthcare. Dermatologist Professor Dr. Mohammad Jamal Uddin and Associate Professor Dr. Md. Mostaq Mahmud served as the coordinators of the workshop.

In his inaugural speech, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam said, SCA is a very important initiative in improving the quality of education, modernizing the evaluation system and producing international standard experts. The workshop on Structured Clinical Assessment (SCA) is a planned, specific and standard method of evaluating the type of education being provided. Which in turn will further improve, accelerate and expand the higher medical education program. This workshop will play a special role in ensuring that the country’s patients receive the most modern quality specialist medical services and will also make a great contribution to the expansion of quality specialist medical education and service programs. Through SCA, a student can be accurately assessed in a well-defined manner. The importance of this workshop is undeniable in meeting the needs of the people of the country, including creating quality questions, updating the curriculum, and making the country shine in medical education.

Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader said, “Academic activities and research are very important for a medical university. Ensuring quality question papers in the examination is a big challenge. To address that challenge, the current administration of BMU has taken the initiative to create a question bank.”

It was informed in the workshop that this workshop will help ensure better quality in medical education and assessment. It will be helpful in assessing actual clinical skills. Structured clinical assessment plays an important role in ensuring quality in health education and is very effective in improving the skills of future doctors. This is an important step in the sustainable development of the country’s health management and improving the quality of higher medical education. It will play a role in creating international standard doctors by increasing the clinical knowledge and skills of participating teachers, doctors, and even students. The participants said that through this workshop, they got a clear idea about a transparent, impartial and student-centered method of clinical skill assessment. In the concluding session of the workshop, the organizers expressed their hope to organize more such training programs in the future. They said that through regular training, it will be possible to make the clinical assessment system more modern and consistent with international standards.

At the workshop, the book Concise Dermatology edited by Assistant Professor Dr. Abu Reza Sayem Ahmed, a dermatologist at Mugda Medical College, was handed over to the Vice Chancellor of BMAE, Professor Dr. Md.
