With the aim of making the healthcare sector affordable and orderly and ensuring the interests and welfare of patients, the Asia Pacific Management Accounting Association (APMAA) has organized its first international webinar in Bangladesh at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Lecture Hall of BMU’s Super Specialized Hospital, the association and co-organizer BMU organized the webinars on emerging issues in corporate communication and accounting in the healthcare sector from a management and accounting perspective, and the themes of innovation, integrity and accountability in the digital age. The webinars highlighted the importance of health accounting and health economics in the healthcare sector. The webinar organized by the Asia Pacific Management Accounting Association was attended by more than two hundred and fifty teachers, students, experts, officials and representatives of management accounting and related subjects, including representatives from about 50 countries around the world and 40 universities in Bangladesh. The panel expert of this international webinar, Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, presented an important article on ‘Accounting for Health’ in the Bangladesh context. The webinar was attended by Professor Susumu Ino, Chair of the Board of Directors Emeritus of Asia Pacific Management Accounting Association, Chair of the webinar, Director of the Association and Chief Associate Professor of Bangladesh Chapter, Dr. Farhana Begum, Pro-Vice (Administration) Professor of BMU as Co-Chair of the webinar. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, APMAA member BMU Director (Finance and Accounting) Mr. Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan Ratan and others spoke. BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar served as the jury board for the poster presentation event at this international conference. Director of the Association and Chief Associate Professor of Bangladesh Chapter Dr. Farhana Begum delivered the welcome speech at this first international webinar in the country. The keynote speakers in the Integrity in Corporate Communication session were Emeritus Professor Dr. Normah Omar, CIMA from Malaysia and Professor Dr. Masumi Nakashima from Japan. Associate Professor Dr. Dr. Kanitsorn Terdpaopong, CMA and Professor Dr. Mosaddek Ahmed Chowdhury of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Bangladesh. The panelists for the Accounting for Health session were Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of BMU and Professor Dr. Shahzad Uddin, University of Essex, UK. The session was chaired by Professor Dr. Syed Abdul Hamid of Dhaka University. In this international webinar, conducted by Research Assistant Rahik Farhan, experts from home and abroad presented papers and delivered speeches.
In the webinar, BMU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam demanded an increase in budget allocation for the health sector in Bangladesh. At the same time, in order to ensure proper healthcare at low cost, he mentioned the importance of health accounting in every medical university, college and hospital as well as every health service provider institution, in addition to medical services and research. Stating that this webinar will play a positive role in the national level health policy, he said, an accountant plays a major role in measuring revenue and expenditure, allocating revenue, calculating depreciation, preparing accounting reports, tracking compensation, preparing budgets, monitoring financial reports, etc. Every year, millions of people in the country fall into poverty while bearing medical expenses. If management accounting can be applied properly in the necessary areas, it will be possible to protect the people of the country from this to a great extent.
Other speakers said that it is necessary to bring financial expenditure in the healthcare sector under accountability. Many poor patients in the country are becoming destitute while meeting medical expenses. Management health accounting can play a special role in overcoming this situation. Ensuring proper medical care for patients at low cost is the need of the hour. The webinar will contribute to fulfilling this. At the same time, this international webinar will accelerate the financial services sector by promoting proper budget formulation including health budget, proper utilization of health budget, prevention of corruption in healthcare sector expenditure, ensuring transparency and accountability of financial expenditure.
