Various programmes were organised in Bogura on World Rivers Day to raise public awareness about river conservation. Environmental activists staged a human chain demanding effective measures to prevent river encroachment, maintain ecological balance, control pollution and improve waste management. Speakers also called for removing part of boundary wall of Bogura District Jail to widen the walkway along Karatoa River.
Bogura district unit of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) organised the human chain on Saturday on riverbank at DC Park near SP Bridge in town. BAPA Bogura President Engineer Shahabuddin Saikat presided over the programme, which included awareness activities highlighting the importance of rivers. Environmental activists expressed dissatisfaction over the narrowing of riverside walkway near Bogura jail, despite the stretch built along Karatoa River from Deputy Commissioner’s Office being comparatively wider.
BAPA Bogura senior joint secretary and Journalist Leader Syed Fazle Rabbi Dollar, said many rivers across the country were facing serious challenges due to encroachment and pollution. Industrial waste, plastic, sewage and other pollutants were degrading river water quality, while natural water flows were being obstructed in some areas. He said rivers were closely linked to nature, agriculture, economy and people’s livelihoods. Numerous settlements, livelihoods and cultural traditions had developed around rivers. He stressed the need for effective measures to prevent encroachment, control pollution and restore the natural flow of rivers.
Among those who spoke at human chain were BAPA advisory council member Anwarul Karim Dulal, Senior Vice-President Advocate Mozammel Haque, General Secretary Ziaur Rahman, Rafiqul Islam, Motasim Billah Shimul, Advocate Azad Talukder and Md Fazlul Haque.
