On the occasion of World Lung Day 2026, an important seminar on lung diseases, respiratory health, disease prevention and modern medical care was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). The seminar was organized at Room 507 of BMU Super Specialized Hospital at 10:30 am on Wednesday (October 7). One of the objectives of the event was to increase public awareness about lung diseases worldwide, prevent respiratory diseases and highlight the importance of ensuring modern and quality medical care for patients. The chief guest at the seminar was Honorable Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui. The special guest was President of the Chest and Heart Association, Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam Shakil. The program was presided over by Professor Dr. Shamim Ahmed, Chairman of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, BMU. In the seminar, experts discussed the current situation of various diseases of the lungs and respiratory system, modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, disease prevention and the need for public awareness. In particular, emphasis was placed on increasing awareness about various respiratory diseases including shortness of breath, chronic cough, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung infections. Experts say that healthy lungs are one of the main foundations of a person’s overall well-being. Air pollution, smoking, various workplace hazards, infections and lifestyle factors can threaten lung health. Therefore, in addition to seeking treatment after the onset of symptoms, preventive measures, regular health check-ups and timely diagnosis of diseases are very important. Dr. Kazi Momtaz Uddin Ahmed, Dr. Anwarul Anam Kibria, Dr. Rajasish Chakraborty, Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Professor Dr. Shamim Ahmed and Dr. Md. Zahirul Islam Shakil, among others, participated in the seminar as a Panel of Experts. During the discussion, experts emphasized the need for modern technology and integrated medical approaches in the treatment of lung diseases, as well as providing the right medical care to the patient at the right time. At the same time, emphasis was placed on increasing awareness about lung diseases among doctors, health workers, and the general public. The speakers said that in many cases of lung disease, if it can be detected at an early stage, the risk of complications and death can be reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to seek the advice of a specialist doctor without ignoring symptoms such as chronic cough, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or repeated respiratory infections. International awareness events like World Lung Day play a helpful role in conveying important messages about lung health to the general public. At the same time, they create opportunities for doctors to exchange knowledge and experience on new research in medicine, modern treatment methods, and disease prevention strategies. The seminar highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the prevention of lung diseases, timely diagnosis, ensuring modern medical services, and the need for collective efforts to build a healthy and respiratory-free society.
