An influential person named Yusuf has been accused of illegally constructing a shophouse on the main road of Nabiganj Bazar in Ward No. 9 of Charkalkini Union No. 1 of Kamalnagar Upazila of Lakshmipur district. Local residents fear that the construction of such structures on government land will cause serious disruption to vehicle movement and lead to major accidents in the future.
Locals allege that a man named Yusuf is encroaching on government land at an important point in Nabiganj Bazar and constructing shops. The road has become narrow due to the shops built, as a result of which no heavy or small vehicle will be able to take a normal ‘U-turn’ at that place. They say that this construction work is being carried out under the influence of power without any regard for any rules and regulations.
When contacted, accused Yusuf denied all the allegations and said, “I have not occupied any government land. I am building a shop on my own land.”
Meanwhile, when the attention of the Kamalnagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) was drawn to the matter, he said, “We were not aware of this earlier, we first came to know about it through journalists. The information will be verified. If shops have been built by occupying government land, legal action will be taken subject to investigation.”
Local conscious circles and ordinary businessmen are demanding urgent intervention from the administration to take necessary steps in this regard immediately in the interest of recovering government property and ensuring smooth movement of the common people.
