A rally and a discussion meeting were held in Nilphamari to mark the International
Day of Older Persons, centered on the theme "New Thinking for a Long Life." A colorful rally set out from in front
of the Deputy Commissioner's office at 10:00 AM on Thursday (October 1). Organized by the Nilphamari District
Administration, the District Social Services Office, and the Probin Hitoishi Sangha, the rally paraded through the
town's main roads and concluded at the Bangladesh Probin Hitoishi Sangha office. Later, at a discussion meeting
held on the office premises, speeches were delivered by Md. Mehedi Morshed (Additional Deputy Commissioner,
Education and ICT); Agriculturist A.K.M. Jahangir (President, Nilphamari District Branch of the Bangladesh
Association for the Aged); Farhad Hossain (Probation Officer, Social Services Office); Kamrul Alam Shah Mukul
(Social Service and Cultural Secretary of the Association); Hridoy Hossain (Urban Social Services Officer); and
members including Professor Aktarul Alam Raju, Principal Prahlad Chandra Das, and Engineer Mannan Basunia,
among others.
Speakers at the discussion meeting stated that the elderly are not a burden on society; rather, their life experience
and knowledge constitute an invaluable asset. They emphasized the importance of leveraging this experience to
guide the younger generation forward, while also ensuring love, respect, and care for the elderly within both the
family and society.
The speakers further emphasized that respecting parents and the elderly is both a moral and religious duty.
Therefore, a mindset of respect and responsibility towards the elderly must be cultivated in children right from
within the family, as today's youth are the elderly of tomorrow. The event called upon children to stand by their
parents until the very end of their lives and to act responsibly in upholding their rights and dignity.
