A government canal in Kotalipara, Gopalganj, has been cleared of encroachment following administrative intervention prompted by reports of a dam being constructed across it. The very next day after the news was published, Sujan Molla, the Organizing Secretary of the Bandabari Union Jubo Dal, was expelled from his party post over the incident.
An initiative had been taken to farm fish in a section of the government canal in the Tulatala area of Bandabari Union by constructing a bamboo dam. Following the publication of reports on the matter, the Upazila administration—acting on the instructions of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saif-ul-Arefin—took steps to remove the dam.
The bamboo structures were removed, and the canal was cleared of encroachment on the afternoon of September 28. Tapas Kumar Bhakta, the Tehsildar currently in charge of the Bandabari Union Land Office, confirmed the development on the afternoon of September 30.
Sujan Molla admitted to constructing the dam, explaining that his family owns approximately 20 *bighas* of land adjacent to the canal; since the land was lying fallow, they had initiated the fish farming project. However, he acknowledged that blocking off government property was improper.
Earlier, following the publication of news regarding the issue on September 26, Sujan Molla was expelled on September 27 through an order signed by Upazila Jubo Dal Convener Ranjan Mallick and Member Secretary Md. Mannan Sheikh. He was expelled on charges of violating party discipline and engaging in various controversial activities.
He had previously been expelled from the same position on February 24 but was reinstated on April 4 after the expulsion order was withdrawn.
