Rajshahi Press Club President and veteran journalist Saidur Rahman has passed away (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un). He died at around 4:30 am on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. He was suffering from kidney problems. He was 62 years old at the time of his death.

Saidur Rahman was unmarried. He was the fourth of seven brothers and two sisters. He was born in Pathanpara, Rajshahi city. He is the son of former governor and lawyer Ataur Rahman and language soldier Monowara Rahman. His maternal grandfather was Madar Bakhsh, a renowned lawyer and educationist of Rajshahi.

Saidur Rahman started his journalism career in the 1980s by working for the daily Karatoya. In his long career as a journalist, he has worked for various media outlets. He was last working for the daily Bhorer Kagoj. He has written and struggled for a long time on various problems, crises and public interest issues of Rajshahi.

Saidur Rahman passed his SSC from Rajshahi Government Laboratory School. Later, he studied at Rajshahi College. For higher education, he went to Moscow, Russia and obtained a higher degree there.

Saidur Rahman’s younger sister Afrozi Rahman shared this information. She said that her brother’s body is currently kept at home.

Saidur Rahman was the heir to a traditional political and social family of Rajshahi. His maternal grandfather Baksh was a renowned lawyer and politician. He played an important role in the expansion of higher education in Rajshahi. He also played a major role in the establishment of Rajshahi University.

Saidur Rahman’s father, Ataur Rahman, was also a prominent figure in the political history of Rajshahi. He was elected while incarcerated in the 1954 United Front elections. His mother, Bhashasainik Monowara Rahman, was involved in social service and public welfare work.

Saidur Rahman did not just keep the family tradition in his memory. He tried to carry forward that trend of public welfare in his own life as well. He was vocal about various problems, crises and public interests of Rajshahi for a long time.

Rajshahi Press Club General Secretary Golam Mostafa Mamun said, Saidur Rahman was active in all moral movements in Rajshahi. He wrote about various issues including the problems and crises of Rajshahi for a long time. His death has caused an irreparable loss to the people of Rajshahi.

Golam Mustafa Mamun also said that Saidur Rahman’s body will be kept in front of the Rajshahi Press Club from 12 noon to 1:30 pm on Monday. There, journalists, colleagues and people from different walks of life will pay their respects to him. His funeral will be held at Dargapara Mosque after Asr. Later, he will be buried at Hentem Khan Cemetery.
