They are angry that they have not received administrative redress despite long-standing harassment, attempts to seize land and incidents such as looting fish from ponds. The hour-long human chain and protest rally was held at 11 am on Sunday, adjacent to Sheikh Hasina University (Netrokona University) in the Bahirchapra area of Netrokona-Mohanganj road.
The affected families of Pukuria Mouza in the urban area complain that the continuous threats and muscle power exercises of the local influential circles can turn into a major bloody conflict at any moment. Despite repeated knocking on the doors of the administration, no solution has been found, on the contrary, the common people are spending their days in extreme insecurity due to the reckless behavior of the squatters.
Area residents Shafiqul Islam, Soyel Basar, Babul Mia, Swarna Akhter and Rokeya Begum spoke at the rally organized during the human chain.
Speakers at the gathering said with great anger that the listed gang of local influential people, Anwarul Islam Sagar, Al-Amin, Wazed Ali Fakir and Ferdous Kabir Rumel, have been engaged in heinous attempts to seize century-old ancestral homes and land without respecting the law for a long time. Not only are they plotting to seize land, but this gang has also committed criminal acts such as forcibly looting fish from the ponds of that land.
The agitators lamented, “We have been going door to door with written complaints from the local administration and law enforcement agencies. But for unknown reasons, the administration has not taken any effective action so far. This silence from the administration is making the land grabbers and influential squatters more reckless.”
The speakers demanded an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident and strict legal action against those involved. Otherwise, the speakers warned of more stringent programs on the streets.
After the human chain, the angry locals took out a protest march in the area. The march circled various important parts of the Netrokona-Mohanganj road, escalating the situation. The protest program today, with the spontaneous participation of the general public, has created a huge stir in the area.
