Police have filed two separate cases against Chhatra League leaders and activists in Thakurgaon. In both cases, the leaders and activists of the organization have been accused of gathering in the dark of night, raising anti-government slogans and conspiring to commit sabotage. A total of 31 people have been named in the two cases. In addition, 45 to 60 other unidentified people have been named as accused.
Two cases were filed at Sadar Police Station on Tuesday. In one case, 16 people were named and 25 to 30 unidentified people were named as accused, while in the other case, 15 people were named and 20 to 30 unidentified people were named as accused. Both cases were filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The first case was filed by Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Soleman Gani. The complaint states that on August 31, around 4 am, the police received secret information that leaders, activists, financiers, advisors and instructers of the banned Chhatra League had gathered on the Thakurgaon-Panchagarh highway in front of the Rural Eye Hospital in Telipara, Salandar Union, Sadar Upazila, with the intention of carrying out sabotage and destructive activities.
Later, when the police reached the spot, the people present there fled in different directions upon sensing the police presence, the complaint states. It has been claimed that the police were able to find out the names and addresses of the accused in the complaint based on the information provided by the two people present there.
The accused named in this case include Royal Barua, New Moon, SM Salman, Mahabub, Md. Osman Gani, CM Sabbir Hasan Hridoy, Arafat Hossain alias Rabbi, Abid Hossain Hridoy alias Guddu, Bidhan Roy, Md. Shaon Sabbir, Swadhan, Raju alias Chhota Raju, Boro Raju, Md. Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, Md. Khairul Islam and Md. Monowar Hossain.
The statement further states that the accused had conspired with each other to disrupt peace and order in the country and commit major sabotage. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit terrorist acts with the aim of endangering the integrity, solidarity, public safety and sovereignty of Bangladesh.
On the other hand, the statement in the second case mentions that a similar incident took place on the regional road in front of the Thakurgaon Municipality Art Gallery and Singer Showroom at around 9 pm on the same day.
The case was filed by Sadar Police Station SI Moniruzzaman. The complaint states that on August 31, around 9 pm, the police went to the spot after receiving information that leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and their financiers, advisors and instructers had gathered in the area for the purpose of sabotage and destructive activities. The complaint claims that when the police reached the spot at 9:10 pm, the people present fled.
According to the police, the names of 15 people were known based on the information given by two people present at the scene. They are Royal Barua, Newmun, SM Salman, Mahabub, Md. Osman Gani, CM Sabbir Hasan Hridoy, Arafat Hossain alias Rabbi, Abid Hossain Hridoy alias Guddu, Bidhan Roy, Md. Shaon Sabbir, Badhan, Pritam, Swadhan, Md. Rafiqul Islam Rafiq and Antar Sheikh.
The second case also accuses the accused of conspiring against the state, disrupting public security, and gathering for the purpose of sabotage.
