Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) today held its Tree-Planting Program 2026 across all six residential halls as part of the five-year, 25 crore tree plantation initiative announced by the government, reaffirming its commitment to a greener, more sustainable and liveable campus. The program began at 11:30 am at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Hall under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. GKM Mustafizur Rahman, and was subsequently held at the New Female Hall, Ila Mitra Hall, Begum Rokeya Hall, Shaheed Ahsanullah Master Hall and the New Male Hall. Improved varieties of fruit-bearing trees were planted in the premises of each hall, turning the university’s residential areas into vibrant spaces of collective participation and environmental commitment. The tree-planting drive follows its formal inauguration on July 11, 2026, by Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, who launched the program during his visit to GAU as the chief guest at the orientation of newly admitted students of the Summer 2026 term. Speaking at a brief discussion held on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. GKM Mustafizur Rahman said, “Tree planting is not merely an environmental initiative, it is a commitment to ensuring a livcable Bangladesh for future generations. By integrating agriculture, environmental stewardship and human wellbeing, Gazipur Agricultural University is firmly committed to supporting the government’s efforts to build a self-reliant Bangladesh.” The program was attended by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Jahedur Rahman, Treasurer Prof. Dr. Md. Safiul Islam Afrad, Convener of the Tree Plantation and Environment Day Committee Prof. Dr. Nasrin Akter Ivy, Member-Secretary Prof. Dr. Md. Abiar Rahman, deans and directors, Proctor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Saiful Alam, Registrar Md. Abdullah Mridha, provosts of the respective halls. and faculty members, students, officers and employees. The initiative is part of GAU’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and long-term campus development. Earlier, the university planted medicinal and flowering trees at different locations across the campus to preserve the glorious memory and spirit of the July 2024 mass uprising and in line with its 50-year Master Plan.
