The unveiling of this plaque marks the fulfillment of the long-standing demand of the people of this northern district for higher education. Local residents hope that the establishment of the university will increase the opportunities for higher education for students from Thakurgaon and surrounding districts. At the same time, the tendency of students to go to other districts for higher education will decrease and educational and economic activities in the region will become more dynamic, according to those concerned.

This is Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s first official visit to his home district Thakurgaon after assuming office as President. On the second day of the two-day official visit, he unveiled the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University.

Expressing his gratitude and thanks to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the President said, “Prime Minister Tarique Rahman approved Thakurgaon University in a very short time and started the subsequent activities. In that context, the foundation stone of the university was unveiled today. I hope that the design and infrastructure of this university will be prepared in a very short time and the construction work will begin.”

He said, ‘Today is a happy day for the people of this area. Because, from now on, the people of this area will get the opportunity of higher education and higher education will expand in this region. An opportunity has been created to contribute to the development of Bangladesh by utilizing the youth and future generations. I believe that the people of this area will take that opportunity and this is my expectation to truly develop this university as a center of excellence.’

Present with the President at the time were State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, VC of Thakurgaon University Dr. Md. Israfil Shahin, various officials of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission Board, District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, and various officials and members of the administration.

Earlier, on Sunday (September 6) afternoon, the country’s 23rd President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir arrived at Thakurgaon Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium by helicopter. Later, he received a guard of honor at the Circuit House. From there, the President went to the Senua family cemetery and visited the graves of his parents. In the afternoon, he attended a civic reception at the Government Boys’ High School main ground and addressed the people of Thakurgaon.
After unveiling the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University on Monday, he received a guard of honor at the District Circuit House and left for Dhaka by helicopter from Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium.

It is worth mentioning that this university is going to be built on about 86 acres of land in Mohanpur Sugar Farm, next to Thakurgaon-Pirganj road in Shibganj area of ​​Jamalpur union of Sadar upazila, 15 kilometers west of Thakurgaon city. The Bangladesh University Grants Commission Board has allocated a budget of 9 crore 12 lakh taka for Thakurgaon University in the financial year 2026-27.
