An anti-polythene awareness campaign and leaflet distribution program was held in Brahmanbaria to create public awareness about the harmful effects of polythene and protect the environment. The program was held at the city’s Jagat Bazar on Sunday morning under the initiative of the Zilla Parishad.
During the program, awareness leaflets highlighting the harmful effects of polythene were distributed among market traders, buyers and pedestrians. At the same time, traders were urged to use eco-friendly alternative bags instead of polythene.
During the program, District Council Administrator and Brahmanbaria District BNP General Secretary Alhaj Sirajul Islam Siraj personally distributed leaflets among traders and passersby. During this time, he exchanged views with the traders and sought their cooperation in stopping the use of polythene.
Sirajul Islam Siraj said, “The indiscriminate use of polythene has become a serious threat to the environment. Since polythene does not easily dissolve in the soil, it remains in the environment for a long time. As a result, various environmental problems including soil, water and waterlogging are created.”
He said that if the general public becomes aware and stops using polythene and if traders refrain from buying, selling and supplying polythene, its use can be reduced to a large extent. Therefore, he called for the use of eco-friendly bags made of jute, cloth and paper instead of polythene.
Addressing the traders, the District Council Administrator further said, “Today we are issuing a warning. In the future, if any shopkeeper uses, sells or stores polythene, legal action will be taken against them. Everyone must play a responsible role in protecting the environment.”
He said that it is not possible to completely stop the use of polythene through campaigns or law enforcement alone. For this, people from all walks of life, including traders, buyers, and the general public, must come forward collectively.
At that time, the market traders welcomed the anti-polythene initiative and assured their cooperation in the district council’s programs to protect the environment. They also demanded that such campaigns be conducted regularly to raise public awareness.
Leaders and members of social organizations ‘Dheu’, ‘Oikyabuddha Sadar Brahmanbaria’ and ‘Nongor’ participated in the program. They went to various shops in the market and distributed awareness leaflets among traders and buyers and informed them about the harmful effects of using polythene.
Those concerned said that in addition to reducing the use of polythene to protect the environment, it is important to increase public awareness. By providing eco-friendly bags instead of polythene to buyers in the market and encouraging traders to use alternative bags, it is possible to gradually control the use of polythene.
The program aims to create anti-polythene awareness among businessmen and the general public, as well as highlight the need for collective efforts to protect the environment.
