A schoolgirl has been staging a sit-in for four days at her alleged lover’s house in Sultanpur village under Bahara Union No. 3 of Shalla Upazila in Sunamganj, demanding marriage. The incident has created a stir in the area.
On Wednesday (September 2) afternoon, after receiving information from local residents, this correspondent visited the house and found the girl sitting on the veranda of the residence of Rafiqul Islam Rakib.
Speaking to journalists in a tearful voice, the girl alleged, “I have been in a relationship with Rakib for nearly three years. During this time, we had a relationship as husband and wife. Later, he brought me to his house promising to marry me. However, I was subsequently attacked with a machete in an attempt to kill me. After that, Rakib’s elder brother Shahidul and other family members forced me out of the house, locked the door and left. I have been staying here for four days. If he does not marry me, I will be forced to commit suicide.”
Several attempts were made to contact Rakib by phone, but his mobile number was found switched off.
When contacted by phone, Rakib’s elder brother Shahidul Islam said, “This is entirely a conspiracy. This is being done to frame us. If my brother has committed any crime, she should file a case with the police station. Why is she staging a sit-in?”
Local elder and BNP leader Shishu Mia said, “The girl has been sitting here for four days, enduring sun and rain. We have made several attempts locally to resolve the matter. Although efforts were made for a settlement, the boy’s family has not agreed.”
When contacted by phone, Shalla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Sohel said, “I was not aware of the matter. I am sending police there immediately. Necessary action will be taken after investigation.
