While there has been much criticism surrounding the time spent in administrative duties by the recently appointed Acting Registrar of Rajshahi University (RU), Professor Dr. Iftikharul Alam Masud, another important aspect of his activities has come to the fore—his strict stance on not granting privileges beyond the rules and following the university’s laws and regulations in administrative decisions.
According to those involved, he prioritized following the right process over the pressure to make quick decisions. That’s why, while he has been accused of ‘long-windedness’ in some cases, his supporters say it was an attempt to ensure administrative transparency and compliance with rules.
While holding important administrative positions like registrar, Masood emphasized following the rules and regulations in recruitment, posting, various applications, administrative approvals and document disposal. Those concerned said that he tried to make decisions by verifying the relevant documents and statutory processes, not based on the demands of any individual or group.
‘The reason for the opposition is not to provide illegal benefits’:-
Professor Masood’s own statement also makes his administrative stance clear. He claims that a section of those making various allegations against him are mainly angry that they could not get illegal benefits from him.
He said, “Ask those who are making these allegations to provide evidence. I have seen that those people are making these lies, to whom I did not give any illegal benefits, who could not take illegal benefits, a part of them are writing these things in various ways. If they have evidence of the allegations, they will provide it.”
His statement is that he has always prioritized rules and regulations over personal relationships, pressure, or a culture of favoritism in the performance of administrative duties.
Not procrastination, but trying to follow the process:-
The most common complaint against Masood is the delay in various files and administrative work. However, those involved in his side say that the disposal of any administrative file of the university is not always a matter of a single decision. In many cases, the opinion of the concerned department, verification of documents, statutory position and approval are required. Therefore, if a file is not disposed of quickly, it cannot be said to be intentionally withheld.
He followed a process that prioritized making the ‘right decisions’ over making ‘quick decisions’. While this took longer in some cases, it reduced the risk of going outside the rules.
Where is the concrete evidence of corruption or financial scam?:-
Various criticisms and allegations against Masood have also spread on social media. But an analysis of the nature of these allegations shows that a large part of them focus on his administrative behavior, speed of decision-making, or personal behavior.
On the other hand, no specific and verifiable evidence has been made public against him of serious allegations such as corruption, financial scams, recruitment-trading, or taking personal financial benefits.
Of course, the lack of evidence for an allegation in public cannot be considered conclusive proof of the complete untruthfulness of the allegation. However, presenting serious allegations as established truth without evidence is also not consistent with journalistic principles. This is where Masood’s statement is important—he demanded evidence from the accusers.
Official rules for disclosing information:-
He has also been accused of withholding information from journalists. However, not all information in university administrative documents is immediately divulgable. In particular, documents related to recruitment, personal information, administrative decisions, or sensitive institutional matters may require approval and verification by relevant authorities.
Masood’s side argues that he has tried to follow official procedures in providing information to journalists, so his supporters see the delay in getting information as an administrative precaution rather than a cover-up.
The signature of talent in academic life:-
Beyond his administrative credentials, Professor Dr. Iftikharul Alam Masud has a long academic background. He has been teaching at the Arabic Department of Rajshahi University for more than two decades.
He also demonstrated extraordinary talent in his academic career. It is said that he was awarded for the rare achievement of achieving the highest marks in all subjects of the university in both the honors and master’s examinations. Later, he studied at the University of Casablanca in Morocco for higher education.
In addition to teaching, he had to handle various administrative responsibilities at the university, both academic and administrative.
Voiceless role against irregularities:-
Professor Masud’s colleagues also cited his vocal opposition to irregularities and oppression at various times at the university as one of his positive aspects.
According to them, he has a long-standing tendency to follow institutional rules rather than pressure from any party or personal gain. As a result, he has tried to maintain the same position even while in administrative charge.
Although there are allegations against him of neglecting departmental duties or delaying students’ academic activities, these allegations cannot be considered proven facts unless the results of an impartial investigation or the university’s final decision are made public.
Evaluate the action, not the person:-
There may be disagreements about Professor Masood’s administrative role. Criticism is a natural part of a democratic and institutional environment. However, when evaluating a teacher and administrator, it is important to focus on his decisions, documents, administrative actions, and verifiable information rather than personal attacks or social media posts.
In Masood’s case, the issues that come to the fore, along with criticism, are his long teaching career, extraordinary achievements in his academic career, his efforts to follow rules and regulations in administrative duties, and his stance against irregularities.
As a result, his tenure needs to be evaluated not in light of one-sided allegations, but rather by finding answers to questions such as how he followed the rules in making decisions, where he prevented irregularities, and what kind of evidence there is to support the allegations against him.
Because it is often more difficult to follow the rules than to be popular in the administration; and the decision not to provide benefits outside the rules can sometimes be the biggest source of criticism for an official.
