Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) celebrated National Fisheries Fortnight 2026 with a vibrant range of program highlighting the nutritional value of fish, sustainable use of aquatic resources and the fisheries sector’s vital contribution to Bangladesh’s economy. Observed nationwide from August 16 to 30 under the theme “A Self-Reliant Nation Through Silver Fish, Bangladesh First,” the celebrations at GAU included a colourful rally, discussion session and fish fingerling release, organized by the Faculty of Fisheries. On Tuesday (August 25), Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman led a lively rally from the Faculty of Fisheries premises. Teachers, students, officers and staff joined the procession, carrying banners and placards promoting fisheries conservation and aquatic biodiversity. Students appeared in creative roles as boatmen, fishers and researchers, adding a festive spirit to the campus. the discussion session following the rally, GAU Vice-Chancellor professor Dr. GKM Mustafizur Rahman attended the program as a chief guest. Treasurer Professor Dr Md Safiul Islam Afrad and Professor and Proctor Professor Dr Mohammad Saiful Alam attended the program as a special guest. The session was chaired by Professor Dr Farhana Haque, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, while Professor Dr Md Nurunnabi Mondal, convener of the Rally and Fish Fingerling Release Committee, conducted the program. In his speech, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman said fisheries scientists have a vital role in meeting the country’s nutritional needs. He urged teachers and students to focus on IoT-and nanotechnology-based research to ensure safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable fish production. Later, the Vice-Chancellor released fingerlings of rohu, kalibaus, mrigal, sarputi and other species into the university’s waterbody. Earlier, on August 17, GAU and the Gazipur District Fisheries Office jointly organized a dialogue on “Fisheries Resource Conservation and Sustainable Production”, bringing together fisheries officials, farmers, entrepreneurs and academics. The celebrations will conclude with a cultural evening at the university’s Sufia Kamal Auditorium on August 30.
