The buyer claims that it may be due to keeping it in the refrigerator with chemicals, while the seller claims that the problem may be from the bakery and the cook. The Food Safety Authority has seized two types of meat to find out the real reason. The concerned authorities said that it is not possible to confirm the green color without a lab test report. No complaint has been filed in the incident so far. After this incident, questions have been raised in the public mind about how safe and health-risk-free the meat purchased is. Conscious locals have demanded that the real reason be determined and made public.
It is worth noting that on July 22, the employees of the Modern Bakery in the Upazila Sadar bought beef from the market and cooked it, and the meat turned green. Abdullah Zahir Uddin, the son of the bakery owner, said that all the employees of the bakery cook beef together once a month, eat, drink and have fun. He claimed that no food coloring is used in the bakery.
Khandaker Titon Hossain Rakib, the chef and head mechanic of the bakery, said that I am not a regular chef, but that day I was cooking. Regular chef Khairul Islam cooperated with me. The three of us bought about 4 kg of refrigerated beef from Ismail’s shop in the market. After washing the meat well and stirring it on the pan, all the meat turned green in an instant. Later, the cooked meat along with the pan was shown to the seller, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Thana police. The chef of the bakery said that this could have happened because the spoiled meat was kept in the fridge with chemicals.
Abul Kalam, a long-time meat market trader, said he has been in the meat business for 35 years, but he has never heard of such an incident. I think something could have happened from the bakery, the cook or the spices. He believes that the matter will be known after investigation and testing.
Meat seller Ismail Hossain said he has been in the beef business for 15 years. No such incident has happened before. On Monday and Tuesday, I kept about 15 kg of meat in the fridge, which I sold to Modern Bakery and 4 other people, and even cooked the meat at my own home because I had guests at my house. Just as no customer except Modern Bakery made any complaint, there was no change in color while cooking at home. The meat trader believes that it was somehow caused by the bakery employees.
Upazila Sanitary Inspector and Upazila Food Safety Officer Uday Kumar Mondal said we have spoken to the seller and several buyers that day, but we have not yet been able to determine the real reason for the green color of the beef while cooking. However, we have collected/seized two types of meat including the cooked meat and informed the District Food Safety Authority about the entire incident. He said that it is not possible to say anything in detail about the green color without the lab test report.
Former General Secretary of the Sholaana Businessmen Cooperative Society, Ilias Hossain, said that since the incident, there has been a kind of apprehension among the general public about meat. Whether the purchased meat is safe and free from health risks depends on determining the reason for the color change of this meat. Everyone expects that the Food Safety Authority will uncover the real secret of this as soon as possible and make it public.
