Citing locals, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Riaz Uddin Ahmed, acting commander of the 8th Armed Police Battalion (APBN) deployed for the security of the Rohingya camps, said, “Heavy rains have continued in Cox’s Bazar since the beginning of this month. This has shaken the foundation of the soil on the hill. Although the continuous rains in Cox’s Bazar have stopped since July 14, the rains continue. This puts the residents of the Rohingya camps in the hills at risk.”
In such a situation, on Monday evening, a large section of land collapsed in the house of Sami Ullah, a resident of D-5 Block of Rohingya Camp No. 8-East, Balukhali, Ukhia. Two people were buried in the landslide. At that time, local Rohingyas, volunteers and law enforcement members carried out an immediate rescue operation and rescued two people in injured condition. Later, a young woman named Bibi Hafsa died on the way to take the injured to a local hospital. An injured child is undergoing treatment at GK Hospital adjacent to the Rohingya camp.
The body of the deceased has been handed over to his relatives after completing the legal process, said the APBN police official.
Earlier, in separate incidents in the Rohingya camp in Ukhia, eight people died in landslides on July 5 and five on July 7. With this, 14 Rohingya have died in landslides.
