Three people sentenced to life
Three accused in Thakurgaon have been sentenced to life imprisonment and three others to life imprisonment in a child rape case that took place 15 years ago.
Thakurgaon Child Violence Prevention Tribunal Judge and District Judge Ali Mansur announced the verdict on Sunday afternoon.
According to the court verdict, the three main accused Anis Rana, Saiful Islam and Dulal have been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of two lakh taka each under Section 9(3) of the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act, 2000. The other three accused Anisur, Khatibur Khatu and Lalu have been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of one lakh taka each under Section 9(3)/30 of the same act, failing which they will undergo another year of rigorous imprisonment.
The court also ordered in its verdict that the money recovered from the convicts will be given as compensation to the victims. If necessary, the District Administrator has been instructed to collect the money by selling the movable and immovable properties of the convicts at auction.
According to the case details, on October 21, 2011, a 14-year-old girl was forcibly abducted and gang-raped in the Dakshin Salandar area of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. Four days after the incident, the victim’s father filed a case with Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station. After a long judicial process, the verdict in this much-discussed case was announced on Sunday, nearly 15 years after the incident.
Five defendants were present in the court during the verdict. However, the court issued an arrest warrant along with a sentence warrant against Anis Rana, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, as he was absconding.
State prosecutor Badiuzzaman Chowdhury said, “Even after a long time, the victim’s family has got the desired justice through this verdict. The state is completely satisfied with the order of the learned court, considering the gravity of the crimes of the accused, to sentence three to death and three to life imprisonment. This verdict will send a strong message to the criminals in the society. We hope that the absconding accused will be arrested soon and the verdict will be implemented.”
