Human Trafficking Case Accused Arrested in Shalla; Police Continue Drive to Capture Two Fugitives
Police in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj have arrested one accused in a case filed under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the two remaining fugitives. According to police, acting on the instructions of the Superintendent of Police of Sunamganj, a special operation was conducted under the leadership of Shalla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Police in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj have arrested one accused in a case filed under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the two remaining fugitives.
According to police, acting on the instructions of the Superintendent of Police of Sunamganj, a special operation was conducted under the leadership of Shalla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Rokibuzzaman, with SI Md. Shahjahan, SI Imam Arfin, and other members of the force.
During the operation, police arrested Tafazzul Mia (50), son of late Md. Madan Mia, from his residence in Shalla village, Shalla Upazila, Sunamganj District. He is an accused in Shalla Police Station FIR No. 11, dated July 18, 2026 (GR No. 77), filed under Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012.
The two remaining fugitives in the case have been identified as Md. Akash Mia (27), son of Gulzar Mia, and Gulzar Mia (52), son of late Md. Madan Mia, both residents of Shalla Upazila. Police said raids are continuing to apprehend them.
According to police, the arrested suspect and the two absconding accused are members of an active human trafficking network. Preliminary investigation suggests that Md. Akash Mia is involved with an international human trafficking syndicate.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused allegedly collected Tk 2.2 million (22 lakh) from the complainant, Masud Rana Rakib, after promising to send him to Italy. Instead, they allegedly trafficked him to Libya and handed him over to a mafia group. The perpetrators reportedly recorded videos of him being tortured and used them to extort an additional Tk 1 million (10 lakh) from his family.
After enduring prolonged inhumane conditions, the victim returned to Bangladesh on December 1, 2025, with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Embassy of Bangladesh in Libya. Upon his return, he filed the case with Shalla Police Station.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are continuing to arrest other individuals involved in the human trafficking network.
