Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton has called for collective action to combat the adverse effects of climate change. He said that climate change, environmental pollution and depletion of natural resources are among the biggest challenges facing the world today. The government, local government institutions, civil society, youth and the private sector must work together to address this crisis.

He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the High Level Dialogue organized by The Earth Society under the Green Voyage project at the conference room of Hotel X on Wednesday (July 15) afternoon.

At the event, RASC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton said that as part of the implementation of the 250 million tree plantation program announced by Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in 5 years, Rajshahi City Corporation has set a target of planting 250,000 trees in a year. Currently, the tree planting program is ongoing. In addition, initiatives have been taken to establish afforestation and bird sanctuaries in the areas along the banks of the Padma River, which will play a role in preserving the environment as well as increasing tourism and employment.

He further said that to make Rajshahi not just a ‘green city, clean city’ but a modern, clean and environmentally friendly city in the real sense, various initiatives are being implemented, including tree plantation on road islands, beautification, and development of street lights. However, awareness and participation of citizens are essential to make these initiatives successful. If everyone fulfills their respective responsibilities, Rajshahi will become a cleaner and greener city. Rajshahi City Corporation will continue to cooperate in various initiatives for environmental and climate protection in the future and the RAC Administrator called on the young generation to play a more active role in the development of the country and protection of the environment.

The program focused on the exchange of views between policymakers and youth leaders on the participation of women and youth in climate policy, the formulation of inclusive policies to address climate change, ensuring the meaningful participation of women and youth in climate decision-making processes, and strengthening effective and collaborative efforts among relevant stakeholders. The program presented the achievements, experiences, and policy recommendations of the Green Voyage project, as well as discussed various aspects of increasing the participation of women and youth in climate policy and decision-making.

The dialogue was attended by Anwar Hossain, Executive Director of The Earth Society, and stakeholders from government and private organizations.
