A 10-day-long National Tree Fair has been inaugurated in Brahmanbaria, organized by the district administration and the forest department.

Deputy Commissioner Md. Abu Saeed inaugurated the 10-day fair at the city’s National Hero Abdul Quddus Makhon Municipal Mukta Mancha Maidan at 11 am on Tuesday.

Keeping in mind the theme of “Beautify the country with tree plantation, Bangladesh first”, the inaugural ceremony was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Md. Abu Sayeed. District BNP President and District Council Administrator Alhaj Md. Sirajul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Noman Mia, Additional Superintendent of Police Ehsanur Rahman, District BNP Senior Vice President Zahirul Haque Khokon, District Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Maulana Mubarak Hossain and former Municipal Mayor Hafizur Rahman Molla Kochi spoke as special guests.

Pinky Rani Majumdar, Assistant Conservator of Forests of Comilla region, delivered the welcome speech at the event.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Commissioner Md. Abu Sayeed said, “Trees not only maintain the balance of the environment, but are also closely related to people’s lives and livelihoods. We need to plant trees on a large scale now to combat the adverse effects of climate change.”

Speaking as a special guest, District Council Administrator Md. Sirajul Islam Siraj said that a massive tree plantation program is being implemented in desert countries like Saudi Arabia. Former martyred President of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman popularized the tree plantation program in this country. The current government is also giving special importance to tree plantation. He called on everyone to plant at least one tree to protect the environment, conserve biodiversity and build a livable Bangladesh for future generations. At this time, he emphasized on the joint participation of government-private organizations, educational institutions, social organizations and the general public in implementing the target of planting 2.5 million trees in the next 5 years by planting 5 lakh trees every year.

After the event, the guests visited various stalls at the fair and distributed saplings of different varieties of trees among the students.

This 10-day fair features many stalls selling seedlings of various species of fruit, forest, and medicinal plants.
