A sit-in has been held demanding the desired services in the Dhaka-Jashore Padma Setu Rail Project and the launch of the ‘morning train’ from Jessore to Dhaka in the early morning.
The program was held at Jessore Rail Junction on Monday afternoon under the initiative of the ‘Greater Jessore Rail Communication Development Movement Committee’.
At that time, the protesters made six-point demands for the development of the railway and warned of blocking the railway in the future if the demands were not met.
The rally said that even though the mega project ‘Dhaka-Jashore Padma Setu Rail Link’ has been launched, the people of Jessore are not getting its benefits. The leaders of various political, social and business organizations, including ordinary people, took a stand on the platform of the station with banners and festoons in hand, demanding that necessary measures be taken to get the desired benefits.
The protesters complained that although the project was named Dhaka-Jashore, Jessore has been neglected in terms of schedule and number of trains. The current train schedule on this route is not at all compatible with the needs of businessmen, employees, students and general passengers seeking medical treatment. Those who have to return from Dhaka during the day for work are suffering severely due to the lack of a ‘morning train’ in the early morning. Since there is no early morning train, if you need to go to Dhaka for urgent needs, you have to leave the day before, which is very expensive for the common man. That is why early morning trains are essential.
The protesters raised six demands for the overall development of the railway from the program. These are, to introduce a total of three new trains, including a ‘morning intercity’ on the Benapole/Darshan-Jessore-Dhaka route; to add sufficient general coaches to all intercity trains for the convenience of general and low-income passengers; to quickly build double railway lines on the Darshan-Khulna and Benapole-Jessore routes to increase the capacity of the railway; to introduce regular commuter trains from the border areas to Dhaka via Jessore; Launching the ‘Inland Container Terminal’ (ICT) at the Singia Railway Station and taking effective state initiatives to develop the railway system as the main means of public transport.
Greater Jessore Rail Communication Development Sangram Committee convener Kawsar Ali warned, ‘Since 2023, we have been holding peaceful movements like human chains, memorandums and protests. But the railway authorities have only given assurances, not implemented them. If these six-point demands are not implemented within the next month, we will be forced to announce a more stringent and continuous program including a rail blockade in the second week of next month.’
Representatives of various organizations including Sangram Committee Member Secretary Engineer Ruhul Amin and Joint Convener Zillur Rahman Vitu also spoke at the sit-in program.
