Serajul, District Council Administrator, sees signs of peace after 3 days of bloody clashes in Sarai
After three days of bloody clashes between Suryakandi and Dharmatirtha villages of Kalikach Union in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria, peace has finally dawned. With the mediation of Brahmanbaria District Council Administrator Alhaj Sirajul Islam Siraj, both sides have reached an agreement to stop the clashes. After three days of bloody clashes between Suryakandi and Dharmatirtha villages of Kalikach Union in Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria, peace has finally dawned. With the mediation of Brahmanbaria District Council Administrator Alhaj Sirajul Islam Siraj, both sides have reached an agreement to stop the clashes. As a result, traffic has resumed on the Sarail-Nasirnagar-Lakhai regional road after a long closure.
It is learnt that on Sunday evening, during a dispute between Mosharraf Hossain of Suryakandi village and Hadim Mia of Dharmatirtha village over money owed to them, people from the two villages got into a clash. Hadim Mia (55), a resident of Dharmatirtha village, was killed in the clash that started around 7:30 pm.
The next day, Monday, after the burial of the deceased, angry villagers again clashed. During this time, several businesses in Kalikachchh Bazaar were attacked. Police fired blank bullets to control the situation.
On Tuesday morning, the two sides again clashed with each other using indigenous weapons, leading to a fresh clash. At least 30 people were injured in the chase and counter-chase. All types of traffic on the Sarail-Nasirnagar-Lakhai regional road were stopped due to the clash. Ordinary passengers suffered greatly. A large number of police and law enforcement personnel, including Sarail-Ashuganj Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Jahangir Alam and Sarail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Manjurul Quader Bhuiyan, were deployed to control the situation. Most of the shops in Kalikachchh Bazaar were also closed.
As the situation deteriorated, District Council Administrator Alhaj Sirajul Islam Siraj went to the spot around 4 pm on Tuesday. He held a long meeting with elders and representatives of both sides. After the discussion, a total of 10 representatives, five from each side, took responsibility for ending the conflict and pledged not to engage in any violence in the future.
After the meeting, the District Council Administrator visited the house of the deceased Hadim Mia and met the family members and expressed his deep condolences. He assured a fair investigation into the murder and justice. He also promised to permanently resolve the dispute peacefully if he gets the cooperation of the villagers.
According to locals, the administrator’s initiative has created an atmosphere of dialogue between both sides, and peace has begun to return to the area. After three long days of tension and violence, the market is gradually returning to normal and traffic on the roads has also returned to normal. However, law enforcement officers are on alert in the area to maintain normalcy.
