Nearly one kilometer of the Rajabari–Prahladpur road running along the right bank of the Suti River in Sreepur, Gazipur, has collapsed. The damage occurred within just seven months after the contractor handed over the project, allegedly due to weak supervision and improper dumping during construction. The incident has created panic among more than a hundred families living along the riverbank.
On Sunday (June 28) around 12:00 pm, the contracting company began repair work to prevent further erosion. Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) Sreepur উপজেলা Engineer Touhid Ahmed confirmed the matter.
He said that the protective blocks installed along the riverbank had become detached. The damaged portion will be repaired by removing the affected blocks, compacting the base with proper filling, and reinstalling the blocks. The damaged carpeting of the road will also be reconstructed after proper compaction. He expressed hope that there is no immediate risk of further collapse.
According to the Upazila Engineer’s Office, in 2021, contractor Messrs Salam Traders was awarded a project worth approximately Tk 90 million to construct a 5.5-kilometer paved road from Rajabari to Domdoma in Prahladpur Union, aiming to ensure faster communication with Gazipur district town. Although the project was scheduled for completion in 2024, the contractor completed and handed over the work around December 2025, nearly seven months ago.
A visit to the site revealed that a section of the 5.5-kilometer paved road passing along the right bank of the Suti River near Chinashukania village has already collapsed. Several protective blocks installed along the riverbank have broken apart and fallen into the river. Cracks have appeared at multiple points, and some blocks have been lifted onto the road surface. Due to bends and narrowing of the sunken section, vehicles are now moving through the area at considerable risk.
Local residents alleged that poor supervision and improper dumping during construction caused nearly one kilometer of the embankment-protected road section to collapse. They warned that unless strong repair measures are taken quickly, this portion of the road may collapse into the river, disrupting communication entirely.
Residents also claimed that if quality construction work had been carried out, such damage would not have occurred within such a short period. They alleged that the contractor used substandard materials and demanded an investigation and punishment of those responsible.
Rafik Mia (45), a resident of Domdoma village, said they had high hopes when construction of the embankment began along the riverbank. However, the embankment collapsed within seven months of completion, which he believes is clear evidence of poor-quality work. He warned that unless repairs are made quickly, nearby homes may gradually disappear into the river.
Another resident, Rokib Mia, said the road construction was completed only a few months ago, but recent rainfall caused the road along the riverbank to sink. He alleged that the riverbank had been filled rapidly with sand before construction and that improper dumping caused the foundation to weaken. According to him, residents had protested at the beginning of construction, but the blocks were joined using loose sand, causing the joints to separate.
Abdus Salam, owner of Messrs Salam Traders, acknowledged that parts of the road embankment had subsided.
He said, “It may collapse once, twice, even three times. I still have Tk 15 million pending. If it breaks, I will repair it. Even after bill withdrawal, the security deposit remains withheld for two years.”
Sreepur Upazila Engineer Touhid Ahmed said he visited the site after receiving reports of the embankment collapse. Following discussions with the contractor, the damaged section was ordered to be reconstructed, and repair work began on Sunday.
He added that although the contractor had received payment, 10 percent of the security deposit remains withheld, and repairs are being carried out at the contractor’s own expense. Rejecting residents’ allegations of poor supervision, he stated that such broad accusations are not entirely justified.
