With the aim of building a healthy Bangladesh, Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has announced a budget of Tk 1039 crore 54 lakh 26 thousand, prioritizing cancer care, free medicines and healthcare, improvement of medical education, research and training. This information was given at a press conference organized at Shaheed Dr. Milton Hall today, Saturday, June 27, 2026. Honorable Treasurer of BMU, Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, chaired the budget, and Honorable Director (Finance and Accounts) of BMU, Mr. Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan Ratan, presented the details of the budget. Earlier, this budget was approved at the 100th Syndicate meeting of the university held at the same place under the chairmanship of Honorable Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui. In the announced budget, Tk 634 crore 80 lakh has been allocated from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Tk 136 crore 28 lakh 7 thousand from the Bangladesh University Grants Commission and Tk 163 crore from its own income. The deficit in this year’s budget is 105 crore 46 lakh 19 thousand crore taka, which will be compiled through the demand of the concerned ministry in the revised budget later. Also present at the press conference were Honorable Additional Director (Finance and Accounts) Mr. Md. Masud Alam, Honorable Additional Director (Finance and Accounts) Mr. Nasir Uddin Bhuiyan, Honorable Additional Director (Finance and Accounts) Mr. Mohammad Badrul Huda. Honorable Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar said at the press conference, the theme of this year’s budget is, “Let the Bangladesh of the future be a Bangladesh of good health. Treatment will be based on need, not on ability.” In order to build a healthy and prosperous nation, this budget has been prepared by following the ‘Cost Control and Cost Reduction Expenditure Policy’, which is realistic, development-oriented and people-centered, and in view of the growing challenges of the health sector and the needs after modern medical education in the light of economic reality, giving top priority to medical services and research. This budget has been given importance in this budget to contribute to building a humane Bangladesh by modernizing the curriculum, increasing grants for digital classrooms and e-learning research, adding modern medical equipment, introducing electronic medical records (EMR), and providing free medicines. Along with the operating budget, a development budget was also announced. This includes the construction of an accredited lab, research center and administrative building in the old Betar building, establishment of a bone marrow transplantation center, establishment of a super specialized hospital, hepatobiliary and liver transplant center, establishment of a central stem cell and research center, population-based cervical and breast cancer screening program with electronic data tracking, phase 2, etc. In addition, the development budget for the financial year 2026-2027 proposes the construction of a multipurpose residential hall to ensure housing facilities for students, subject to the allocation of space by the university. At the press conference, Mr. Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan Ratan said, “Healthy citizens, prosperous Bangladesh. Healthcare is not a special privilege, it is a fundamental right of people. Quality healthcare for all, this is our commitment. This year’s budget has been announced with this spirit in mind.” He said that in the budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year, the allocation has been increased to 20 crore taka for free medicines, 90 crore taka for the addition of timely medical equipment, 76 crore taka for the new launch of a useless linear accelerator machine in the oncology department for cancer patients, 28 crore 5 lakh taka for research, 7 crore taka for electronic medical records, 5 crore taka for the information and communication technology sector, 1 crore taka for the e-log book sub-sector, 15 crore taka for construction and preservation, 1 crore taka for the books, periodicals sub-sector, 2 crore taka for training expenses, 18 crore taka for increasing the nutritional quality of food for patients, and 227 crore taka for student scholarships and merit scholarships.
