‎Real farmers are deprived of selling paddy at government food warehouses in Nageshwari upazila of Kurigram. There have been allegations that traders are selling paddy. Although the government has invited applications for paddy storage in the godowns this year, it has been alleged that real farmers have applied but are unable to sell paddy at the government price on the pretext of lottery. On Tuesday, June 3, the upazila administration held an online open lottery in the hall room, but the names of real farmers were not on the list. The victims claim that a class of unscrupulous traders have applied using the national identity cards and farmer card information of real farmers. As a result, the people nominated by the traders were selected in the lottery, and the real farmers have been deprived of the opportunity to sell paddy at the government price.
‎The affected farmers allege that the application was made using the necessary information without their knowledge. They have suffered financial losses and been deprived of government benefits. They have demanded that the matter be investigated and action be taken against those involved and the rights of the real farmers be ensured. Out of the total paddy provided by the government this year – 2294 metric tons and about 12 thousand who applied, 765 farmers have been initially nominated in the lottery. In reality, the real farmers are not aware of the application. There have been several allegations that traders have applied using their ID cards. On the other hand, there have been allegations that traders are involved in such activities as the traders have a good relationship with the Nageshwari Food Warehouse staff, OCLSD. When we spoke to the OCLSD in charge of the Nageshwari Food Warehouse in this regard, he said that the paddy is being sold as per the rules. The Upazila Food Controller said that he was not aware of the complaint. However, if anyone makes a specific complaint, it will be investigated and necessary action will be taken. He also claimed that the lottery activities were carried out following government policies.
