Allegations of corruption and irregularities in the construction of the Model Mosque project in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj continue to surface, raising concerns among local residents. Recently, fresh allegations have emerged regarding serious irregularities in the construction of a retaining wall, sparking public dissatisfaction. Allegations of corruption and irregularities in the construction of the Model Mosque project in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj continue to surface, raising concerns among local residents. Recently, fresh allegations have emerged regarding serious irregularities in the construction of a retaining wall, sparking public dissatisfaction.
Earlier, on June 8, several national newspapers published reports highlighting alleged corruption and mismanagement in the construction work of the Shalla Model Mosque. However, according to local residents, no effective action has yet been taken by the authorities concerned.
Residents claim that the retaining wall currently under construction is being built with fewer steel rods than required, and that the rods are being placed with unusually wide gaps between them. They further allege that instead of completing the work during the dry season, the contractors are now attempting to carry out the construction hastily in the middle of the monsoon season, despite the area being submerged in water.
Locals also complain that no supervising engineer is present at the construction site, allowing workers to carry out the work without proper oversight. When several workers at the site were questioned, they reportedly stated that no engineer had visited the site since the Eid holidays and that they were continuing the work on their own.
When asked about the wide spacing between the steel rods, a person responsible at the site reportedly replied, “There are some gaps in certain areas, but those will be corrected later.”
Speaking on the matter, Shalla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Mr. Piyas Chandra Das, stated, “No form of corruption or irregularity will be tolerated in the construction work of the Model Mosque.”
He later instructed the site foreman to ensure that all construction work is carried out properly, in accordance with technical standards and quality requirements.
Meanwhile, members of the local civil society have called upon the higher authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of the project.
