Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Baset Mia, distinguished crop botanist, former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and professor at Gazipur Agricultural University, has been elected President of the Bangladesh Society of Plant Science and Technology (BSPST) for the 2026-2028 term. Prof. Dr. Md. Alamgir Hossain of Bangladesh Agricultural University has been elected General Secretary. The new executive committee assumed office on June 3, 2026, following the completion of the society’s prescribed election process. The committee includes leading academics and researchers from universities and research institutions across the country. Expressing his vision for the society, Prof. Baset Mia said that plant science is not only an academic discipline but also a cornerstone of national food security, sustainable agriculture and future development. He emphasized strengthening BSPST as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange, research excellence, and professional development, while fostering young scientists and promoting the practical application of research outcomes. BSPST works to advance plant science education, research, innovation and professional networking among crop scientists. The organization also supports capacity-building initiatives, training programs, publications, scholarships, awards and other activities aimed at addressing national and global agricultural challenges. Prof. Baset Mia is widely recognized for his contributions to agricultural education through his authorship of several notable textbooks, including A Textbook of Embryology and Reproductive Structure of Crop Plants, Morphology and Taxonomy of Crop Plants and Nutritions of Crop Plants.
