A huge program to sow 2 million date seeds in different parts of the district has been launched to preserve the reputation and glory of Jessore’s traditional date juice. This program was initiated by the social organization ‘Udyam’ and in collaboration with the Jessore Sadar Upazila Agricultural Extension Department and the Department of Environmental Science of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST).
The program was inaugurated on Monday (June 8) by sowing seeds on both sides of a three-and-a-half kilometer road in Konejpur and Nimtala areas of Jessore Sadar Upazila.
‘Best Agricultural Content Creator of the Country’ Jewel Rana inaugurated the program as the chief guest.
Jessore Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Razia Sultana and Assistant Professor of the Department of Environmental Science of UST Tapas Kumar Chakraborty were present as special guests at the program.
Besides, ‘Udyam’ convener Rishad Hasan Bippi, member secretary Delwar Hossain Dilsan, joint convener Tahani Akhter Rupa, members Waliuzzaman, Faisal Iqbal Taman, Sudhangshu Biswas, Rajan Saleh, Tania and Rabiul Islam Ujjwal and other workers of the organization participated in the program.
The leaders of the organizing organization ‘Udyam’ said that under this two-week nationwide program, 2 million date seeds will be sown on various government waste lands, railway lines and on both sides of main roads in Jessore district. Its main goal is to protect the balance of the environment, prevent lightning, increase the number of date trees for future generations and above all, bring back the lost tradition of date juice in Jessore.
Presenting information and data at the program, Udyam member secretary Delwar Hossain Dilsan said that traditional date trees and plants are decreasing at an alarming rate in Jessore. According to government estimates and surveys, in the last five years, about 50,000 productive date palm trees have been cut down in the district and about 1,500 farmers have given up this profession. Due to this reduction in the number of trees and trees, the annual extraction of about 5.5 million liters of date palm juice has decreased in the district. As a result, pure date palm juice and molasses are gradually becoming scarce and skyrocketing in price in this region. If this continues, the proverb ‘Jashore’s fame is the date palm juice’ will be lost forever. He further said, ‘Jashore’s date palm is not just an ordinary plant; it is a big part of the history, rural culture and folk economy of this region. It is the responsibility of all of us to protect this tradition. This small effort of ours is from that urge. By sowing these seeds extensively, the number of date palm trees in the district will increase significantly in the next few years and it will be possible to increase jaggery production and preserve the century-old tradition of Jessore for the new generation. According to the Upazila Agriculture Department and environmental scientists, planting date palm trees in this time of climate change will not only preserve the tradition, but also play a long-term role in preventing soil erosion and controlling the temperature of the environment. The dignitaries have called on the local administration and people from all walks of life to come forward to make such social initiatives successful.
