The construction work of the Model Mosque in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj remains unfinished nearly seven years after the project began, sparking widespread dissatisfaction among local residents. The construction work of the Model Mosque in Shalla Upazila of Sunamganj remains unfinished nearly seven years after the project began, sparking widespread dissatisfaction among local residents. Although construction started in 2019, concerns have been raised regarding the project’s slow progress, alleged irregularities, and lack of proper supervision.
During a recent visit to the site, it was observed that the project lacks an information signboard, leaving the public unaware of essential details such as the project cost, contractor, completion deadline, and overall progress. Rust has appeared on reinforcing steel bars used in the structure, while temporary wooden supports are still being utilized in parts of the multi-story building. Piles of construction waste and debris were also found scattered around the site.
Local residents alleged that construction activities have remained largely stagnant for an extended period. They claimed that only after criticism emerged on social media were a few steel jacks and centering materials brought to the construction site, giving the appearance of renewed activity.
Residents further alleged that officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) have rarely been seen conducting regular inspections of the project. They believe the lack of oversight has contributed to negligence and irregularities in the construction process.
When contacted, Shalla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Piyas Chandra Das stated, “The Model Mosque project falls under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department. Detailed information can be obtained by contacting the concerned department.”
Speaking over the phone, Molla Robiul Islam, Executive Engineer of the Sunamganj Public Works Department, said, “The signboard was blown away during a storm. I am currently attending a meeting. You may speak with Prosenjit Pal regarding this matter.”
However, repeated attempts to contact Prosenjit Pal were unsuccessful, as he did not answer phone calls.
Local residents have expressed concern that the prolonged delay and lack of maintenance could potentially affect the structural integrity of the building. They urged the authorities to complete the construction work without further delay and open the mosque for public use.
