In the terrible storm of the cyclone in Gaibandha, several char areas of three upazilas have become devastated towns. Hundreds of affected families in these areas are still living in the open air after losing their homes. There is no food and cooking facilities. There is no safe shelter under the open air.
It is known that the terrible cyclone that swept over several char areas of Sundarganj, Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas of Gaibandha in the early hours of last Monday (May 18) destroyed the homes of hundreds of people in an instant. Before the sleeping people could realize anything, the roofs were blown away by the storm, the houses collapsed. They lost everything in an instant and became destitute.
These families are still living in the open air without a place to lay their heads. Some are spending the night in the open field, some under trees, some next to broken houses. Many families are spending their days without eating. Now everyone is trying their best to get back on their feet. Some are collecting broken tin cans and patching them together, while others are trying to build temporary shelters with loans.
But due to lack of money, many are still living helplessly under the open sky. The most affected by the cyclone are Char Kharjani in Kamarjani Union of Sadar Upazila, Fazlupur Union of Fulchhari, Bulbuli Char and Char Chaumohani in Erendabari, and Kapasia in Sundarganj, along with a few char areas.
Rahima Begum, a resident of Char Kharjani in Kamarjani Union, said that while it was windy and raining, a hot wind suddenly blew with a loud noise and destroyed everything in an instant.
Alimuddin, a resident of the same char, said that if it was too strong, everything would be destroyed in 5 to 7 minutes of wind. Due to lack of money, many people are still unable to repair their houses. They are spending their days burning in the storm and sun. Even if the government provided them with tin cans, these families could have stayed under cover.
District Relief and Disaster Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Shafiqul Islam said that so far, 500 families in Sundarganj, 42 families in Kamarjani Union of Sadar Upazila and more than 300 families in Fulchhari Upazila have been identified as affected and listed. The work of preparing a list of other affected people is underway. Dry food and rice have been distributed among these families. Work is underway to resettle them.
