Fire Service and Civil Defense Week-2026 has started nationwide with the theme ‘Firefighters have only one goal, we will keep property and life safe’. On Tuesday, May 19, at 10 am at the Fire Service and Civil Defense Training Ground in Purbachal, Narayanganj, the Honorable Home Minister Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed, MP inaugurated the Fire Service and Civil Defense Week, passing out parade and medal presentation ceremony as the chief guest. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Mr. Manjur Morshed Chowdhury was present as the special guest at the event. Honorable Member of Parliament from Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj) constituency Mr. Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan Dipu was present at the event. Director General of the Department Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, ndc, AFWC, psc, presided over the event.
When the Honorable Home Minister reached the Fire Service and Civil Defense Multipurpose Training Ground, Purbachal, Narayanganj at 10 am, he was welcomed by the Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defense. As per the pre-scheduled schedule, the Chief Guest inaugurated the Fire Service and Civil Defense Week-2026 by releasing balloons and pigeons and cutting a cake. Then, when he entered the parade ground and ascended the greeting stage, members of the 4 contingents including the flag-carrying contingent led by Parade Commander Mr. Faisalur Rahman greeted him respectfully. The Honorable Chief Guest inspected the parade. Then, after the basic training of the station officers, firefighters, drivers, divers and nursing attendants was completed, PO cum Adjutant of the Training Complex, Saidul Alam Chowdhury, administered the oath to them.
After the oath-taking ceremony, the chief guest presented medals to the officers and employees selected in the basic training and 20 officers and employees of the Fire Service and Civil Defense who have been awarded state medals in recognition of their heroic work. Then, the Director General of the Department, Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, delivered a welcome speech. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the chief guest and special guests for attending the event. Thanking everyone present, he said, “I firmly believe that with the combined efforts of everyone, the Fire Service and Civil Defense will become a more modern, efficient, humane and people-friendly institution and will play a stronger role in ensuring the safety of the people of the country.”
Then, the special guest of the event, Honorable Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, delivered a speech. He emphasized the importance of performing professional duties with honesty and integrity. He congratulated all concerned for successfully completing the basic training. In his speech, he said to the firefighters, “You are the first to come to everyone’s side in accidents and disasters. You perform your professional duties at the risk of your lives. That is why people consider you a friend in difficult times. I think that by continuing this stream of work, you will become more trustworthy of the people.”
Then the Chief Guest delivered the speech of the Honorable Home Minister Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed, MP. In his speech, he expressed the opinion that the Fire Service has earned the trust of the nation through its professionalism, courage, sacrifice and service activities in any disaster including fire accidents. He said, “This ‘Freedom Award’ organization, which was the first to rush to the side of the people in danger in all disasters, is recognized as a proud force of ours.” Along with increasing its capacity, he also expressed his sincere goodwill for increasing the facilities and benefits of the officers and employees of the Fire Service.
Finally, the parade ended with a march past with the national anthem “Bangladesh Zindabad”. After the parade, the Honorable Chief Guest participated in a photo session with the contingent members. After that, he signed the visitor’s book. Finally, he spoke to the media personnel and answered their various questions.
The event was attended by heads of various organizations under the Ministry of Home Affairs, officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs and various organizations under it, directors of the Fire Service, officials and employees of various ranks of government and private departments, volunteers, officials and employees of various ranks of the Fire Service, and print, electronic and online media workers.
It is worth noting that, on the occasion of Fire Service and Civil Defense Week-2026, in addition to the inauguration ceremony at the central level on May 19, various awareness programs have been organized across the country for three days from May 20 to May 22.
