World Thyroid Day was celebrated on 19 May 2026. This year's theme is "Know, Test, Conquer " and
" Your Thyroid , Your Protector " . Bangladesh Thyroid Society (BTS) celebrated” World Thyroid Day –
2026 " like every year this year and through various programs. The purpose of BTS is to inform the
public about various problems of the thyroid gland and its causes, prevention / remedies. Along
with this, Bangladesh Thyroid Society and Bangladesh Health Reporters Forum jointly organized a roundta
ble meeting with doctors through a seminar symposium. The main discussant in the meeting was Professor
Dr. AKM Fazlul Bari, President of Bangladesh Thyroid Society and Director of NINMAS. He said, " The
thyroid gland is an important organ in the
body that secretes hormones ( thyroid hormones ) that help control the body's metabolic rate , heart
rate , blood pressure , weight, and temperature . But if complications arise in this small gland , problems can arise in various important fun
ctions of thebody . Various complications including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter , and thyroid cancer can de
velop around this gland . "Objectives of the Thyroid Fair: Your thyroid, your
safety, creating public awareness for early diagnosis and disease prevention and control, providing modern
treatment methods and statistical concepts of thyroid disease, if parents have thyroid problems, there
is a 70 % chance that the child will have thyroid problems, thyroid disease is not contagious. About 20 %
of the total population of Bangladesh suffers from thyroid gland and various diseases. 5 out of every
7 patients are women. 60 percent of the affected people are not covered
by medical services. 1 out of every 2300 children suffers from congenital thyroid problems. A study has sh
own that there is a hereditary effect on the spread of thyroid diseases, especially if the
grandmother , grandmother or mother has thyroid problems , then in 70 % of cases , the
chances of children and relatives having thyroid problems are more . Those
who have thyroid patients in their families should urge all family members
to get diagnosed with thyroid through thyroid screening. In addition, 6 % of patients suffer
from hypothyroidism, most of whom do not know that they have thyroid, so it is important to
make them aware because the silent killer thyroid has
become the cause of their physical problems. He also said that successful treatment of thyroid disease is
possible by diagnosing it at an early stage. He believes that it is necessary to ensure low-
cost thyroid services for thyroid patients and citizens.
He also said that if thyroid problems are diagnosed at an early stage , it can be easily controlled . But lack
of awareness , ignoring symptoms and not getting tested on time often lead to major health risks . It is thedemand of the hour to pay attention to thyroid problems. With the advancement of
medical science , diagnosis and treatment of the disease hasbecome much easier than before . Now there is a need to create awareness among the general public. He said that thyroid screening is definitely necessary at four times in
life: immediately after birth, during puberty , before pregnancy for mothers and after the age of 50 .
Professor Dr. Bari said, that the new method of thyroid treatment is”radiofrequency " and " microwave” .
In this case, the tumor can be removed through a needle without any incision; it does not require the patient to be unconscious, or the patient to stay in the ho
spital and this method has no major side effects, and the cost will be low . He believes that the tumor ablatio
n method will contribute to the treatment of thyroid problems and liver cancer of the people of the
country. The meeting also discussed in detail the essence of the results obtained from research on thyroid diseases. Bangladesh Thyroid Society Secretary General
