There is a crisis in the government hospitals of Narsingdi district for transporting patients. There are only 6 ambulances in the 6 upazila health complexes of the district and only 2 ambulances in the 100-bed Narsingdi District Hospital, but one ambulance is idle due to the lack of a driver.
According to the Narsingdi district health department sources, there is 1 ambulance in each of these 6 upazilas – Narsingdi Sadar, Shibpur, Monohardi, Belab, Raipura and Palash. On the other hand, hundreds of patients are admitted to the hospital every day for emergency treatment, referral and accidents. It is not possible to handle this pressure with the limited number of ambulances.
Locals complain that in times of emergency, many patients have to take risks in rented cars or CNG-driven vehicles to the hospital due to lack of ambulances.  This is making the patient’s condition even more critical.
Considering the situation, there has been a demand from the concerned upazilas that additional ambulances are needed. In particular, Narsingdi Civil Surgeon Dr. Bulbul Ahmed said that there is a need to allocate 2 more ambulances in Narsingdi Sadar, 2 in Raipura and 1 in Monohardi.
A doctor who did not want to be named said, “Ambulances are essential for quickly bringing accident, maternity and heart attack patients to and from the hospital. But our vehicles are very few compared to the demand. As a result, it is often not possible to provide timely service to the patient.”
An official of the District Civil Surgeon’s Office said that the matter has been informed to the higher authorities. It is expected that ambulances will be provided quickly if allocated.
Public health experts say that it is necessary to increase the number of ambulances to ensure healthcare in a populous district like Narsingdi. Otherwise, there is a risk of disruption of emergency medical services.
Locals have sought the intervention of the Health Ministry to resolve this crisis quickly.
