A public awareness rally has been taken out at Bangladesh Medical University on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day 2026. The rally, organized with the theme ‘Thalassemia is no longer invisible, let’s find the unknown and extend a helping hand’, was inaugurated as the chief guest by releasing balloons. The rally, which was jointly organized by the Department of Hematology, Department of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology and Department of Transfusion Medicine of BMU, started from the front yard of B Block on Saturday, May 9, 2026 and circled various parts of the campus. In his speech as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui said that there is no alternative to increasing public awareness, timely screening and safe blood transfusion to prevent thalassemia. He emphasized on taking coordinated initiatives to prevent the disease. Present at the event were BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, President of Hematology Society of Bangladesh Professor Dr. Amin Lutful Kabir, General Secretary Associate Professor Dr. Md. Adnan Hasan Masud, Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Karim, Chairman of the Department of Transfusion Medicine Professor Dr. Ayesha Khatun, Assistant Professor and Deputy Registrar (Education) of the Department of Hematology Nasreen Akhtar, among others. In their speech, they said that Thalassemia is a preventable hereditary blood disease. The spread of this disease can be largely prevented through proper awareness, pre-marital screening and timely diagnosis. They also emphasized on ensuring quality treatment and safe blood for thalassemia patients. Participants from various levels, including teachers, doctors, trainees, students, patients and their guardians from the concerned departments, were present at the rally.
