An NGO worker has been accused of beating a loan member in Sadullapur, Gaibandha, for not paying the installment.

The incident took place on Ambagon Road in Dhapherhat Union of the upazila on Wednesday (May 6). The injured person is Lucky Begum, wife of Mintu Mia of Palanpara village in Dhapherhat Union.

Injured Lucky Begum said that a few days ago she took a loan of 30,000 taka from BRAC’s Dhapeerhat branch. She was repaying this money in weekly installments. Finally, 1,500 taka is outstanding. Due to poverty and hardship for some time, she has not been able to pay the weekly installments.
During this situation, on Wednesday morning around 11 am, BRAC field worker Chalma Begum met her on Ambagon Road in Dhapherhat Bazar. At that time, the NGO worker Chalma Begum asked her to pay the outstanding installments. When she expressed her unwillingness to pay the money, an argument broke out between them.

At one point, Chalma Begum pushed Lucky Begum and threw her, leaving the poor member Lucky Begum with a bloody wound on her head. At that time, people nearby came to hear Lucky Begum’s screams and Chalma Begum left.

Later, locals admitted him to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex in neighboring Rangpur district.

BRAC’s Sadullapur Area Office Manager Md. Shahabuddin denied the beating and said that when field worker Chalma Begum met Lucky Begum in that area and asked for the outstanding installment money, she abused her in bad language and a scuffle broke out, during which our office’s field worker Chalma Begum was humiliated.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Dhaperhat Police Investigation Center, Supad Halder, said that both sides have filed two separate written complaints. The matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.
