BADC corn crop cutting in Thakurgaon and field day held
Crop cutting and field day were held in Thakurgaon to promote and expand BADC's hybrid maize varieties. Crop cutting and field day were held in Thakurgaon to promote and expand BADC’s hybrid maize varieties.
A day-long maize crop cutting and field day was held on Tuesday in Shibganj Purba Parpugi area of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila under the Seed Production and Development Project for Paddy, Wheat and Maize organized by the Seed Production Center BADC Thakurgaon.
BADC General Manager (Seeds) Abir Hossain, Additional General Manager Mosharraf Hossain Rintu, Additional General Manager Selim Haider, Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Extension Department Majedul Islam, Additional Deputy Director of Seeds Monowar Hossain, among others, were present as the chief guests at the Maize Crop Cutting and Field Day program.
When I spoke to local farmer Ibrahim at the field day, he said that he has cultivated BADC Hybrid-3 maize on five bighas of land this season. This variety of maize is yielding 90 to 100 maunds per 50 hundred hectares of land. I am expecting a yield of around 400 maunds on my five bighas of land. It cost 1.5 lakh taka, and I will be able to sell it for 3.20 to 30 thousand taka. After deducting all the expenses, there will be a profit of more than 1.5 lakh taka.
Another farmer from the same village, Amirul Islam, said that he cultivated this maize on 25 acres of land and got a yield of 45 maunds. He made almost double the profit by selling it at Tk 1,640 per sack. Amirul said, “Where other varieties of maize yield 70-80 maunds, this hybrid variety of BADC is yielding over 90 maunds.
According to Thakurgaon Department of Agricultural Extension, maize has been cultivated on 46,380 hectares of land in the district during the current Rabi season and 20,550 hectares during the Kharip-2 season. The target of maize production has been set at 556,830 metric tons in the Rabi season and 171,592 metric tons in the Kharip-2 season.
Majedul Islam, Deputy Director of Thakurgaon Department of Agricultural Extension, said, “The soil and climate of Thakurgaon are very suitable for maize cultivation. Farmers are now turning to more productive varieties. This yield of BADC’s hybrid variety will make maize cultivation more popular in this region in the future.”
It is worth mentioning that this season, BADC imported 3355 varieties of maize seeds from India for the first time and supplied them to farmers at low prices. Farmers are happy to get quality seeds at low prices. Thakurgaon BADC has sold 200 tons of seeds this season and is hoping to sell 2000 tons of seeds in the future.
