Leaders of the Khulna Divisional Representative Meeting of the Anti-Imperialism and War Alliance in Jessore said, ‘The agreement with the United States has been made secretly without informing the people or the parliament – which is a direct violation of the constitutional process. In addition, as a result of this agreement, the security, independence, and sovereignty of Bangladesh will be threatened. In the meantime, an agreement has been signed to purchase 14 Boeing aircraft as per the terms of the agreement. 57,000 metric tons of wheat have been purchased at an increased price. The purchase of American products at an increased price is a bad sign for the economy of Bangladesh.’
This divisional representative meeting was held to demand the cancellation of all foreign agreements that are against the national interest, including the unequal trade agreement with the United States, and an end to the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and the imperialist wars of aggression and war around the world.
This Khulna divisional representative meeting of the Anti-Imperialism and Anti-War Alliance was organized at the Press Club Jessore on Tuesday (May 5) afternoon.
The speakers at the rally, chaired by the alliance leader and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Jessore District Committee Abu Hasan, also said that this unequal trade agreement with the United States amounts to selling Bangladesh’s trade policy, tax sovereignty and state procurement policy to US corporate interests. Such an agreement will destroy the domestic industry and agriculture sector, reduce workers’ wages and rights, raise the prices of medicines and essential commodities beyond the reach of the common people, and establish the authority of foreign companies in the state’s investment decisions. The leaders said that as a result of this agreement, Bangladesh’s export-oriented sectors, including the garment industry, will face unequal competition in the US market and domestic investors will be cornered by foreign corporate organizations. The leaders called on the countrymen to unite to demand the cancellation of the anti-national agreement and to build a mass struggle on the streets.
The leaders also said that according to the statement of Professor Yunus’ security advisor and Tarique Rahman’s foreign minister Khalilur Rahman, this slavery agreement was signed in collusion between Professor Yunus, Tarique Rahman, and Shafiqur Rahman. As a result, the people’s unity against this immoral collusion is the main demand now.
At the beginning of the representative meeting, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Abdullah Kafi Ratan delivered the opening speech. Among the central leaders who spoke were Iqbal Kabir Zahid, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Communist League of Bangladesh, Anwarul Islam Babu, member of the standing committee of Bangladesh JSD, Janardan Dutta Nantu, member of the central editorial board of the BSD, Obaidullah Musa, member of the central reading circle of the Communist Movement, and Maqsud Ahmed Moni, member of the central committee of the National People’s Front, among others.
Among the representatives of Khulna division, Taslim Ur Rahman, Secretary and Central Member of the Jessore District Committee of the Revolutionary Communist League of Bangladesh, ASA Rashid, President of CPB Khulna District, Tushar Kanti Das, Secretary of the Revolutionary Communist League of Bangladesh of Bagerhat District and Member of the Central Secretariat, Shafiur Rahman Shafi, Convener and Central Member of the Kushtia District BAS, Nehanuddin Ahmed Sohel, Coordinator of the Jhenaidah District National Gano Front, Engineer Shampa Basu, Coordinator of the Magura District BAS, Harun Ur Rashid, Chairman of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani Parishad Jessore District, Idris Ali, one of the leaders of the Satkhira District Bangladesh JS, Sanjit Rajbangshi, one of the leaders of the Narail District CPP, etc. After the representative meeting, the protest procession left the Press Club and circled various roads of the city.
