Five days after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally inaugurated the re-excavation of Ulashi Canal in Sharsha Upazila of Jessore, work on another canal has begun.
The re-excavation work of the series canal in Habatpur Union of Sadar Upazila was officially started on Saturday.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit was present as the chief guest and inaugurated the canal re-excavation work with his own shovel. Later, the State Minister planted trees on the banks of the canal.
The State Minister said that the BNP’s election promise was to re-excavate canals. After forming the government to implement that promise, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is leading the work of re-excavating 20,000 kilometers of canals across the country. In continuation of that, the series canal re-excavation work of Habatpur Union has started today. Through this, 17 villages will be saved from waterlogging.
He said that once the canal re-excavation is completed, waterlogging will be resolved and crop production will increase. The foundation of the country’s economy will be strengthened.
Also present at the time were Jessore Acting Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Hasan, District BNP President Syed Saberul Haque Sabu, General Secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon and others.
Canal re-excavation work has started under the employment program for the very poor in the fiscal year 2025-26. The Department of Disaster Management and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief are implementing this work. Canal re-excavation work will be done on a daily wage basis. The cost of the three-kilometer series canal re-excavation work has been estimated at 77 lakh 19 thousand taka.
