The Honorable Home Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed, was present as the chief guest and the Honorable Senior Secretary, Public Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, was present as the special guest. The Honorable Home Minister awarded 04 Bangladesh Coast Guard Medals, 04 Bangladesh Coast Guard (Service) Medals, 03 President Coast Guard Medals and 03 President Coast Guard (Service) Medals, a total of 14 medals, for the bravery and courageous work of Bangladesh Coast Guard officers, sailors and civilians. In 1994, the then Honorable Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, realizing the need to form the force to protect the security and potential of the vast coastal region of the country, formulated the ‘legal basis’ of this force. Through her dedicated efforts and visionary leadership, this force was established on 14 February 1995 and in her direct presence, this force formally started its journey with a grand inauguration on 19 December 1995. Since its establishment, every member of the Bangladesh Coast Guard has been making an important contribution to ensuring national security through its round-the-clock presence in the country’s coastal remote areas, river routes and sea borders. This force is playing a very effective role in protecting public life and property, preventing smuggling, protecting fishery resources, preventing drug trafficking, conducting rescue and relief activities in various natural disasters and protecting national interests in the country’s inland rivers and sea routes and coastal areas. The Honorable Home Minister said that the government is implementing various plans to develop the Coast Guard as a modern and up-to-date force. As part of this, three surveillance drones have already been added to the force’s fleet and the process of adding new ships is underway. There are plans to increase the manpower of the Coast Guard to 10,000, and to increase its operational capacity, maritime helicopters and new vessels, including modern drones. He also said that through international cooperation, the construction of multi role response vessels and offshore patrol vessels is progressing rapidly. At the same time, initiatives have been taken to add high-speed bulletproof boats, which will play an important role in curbing crime in coastal areas.
