The current Registrar of the university and Chairman of the Department of Radiology and Imaging, Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, has been appointed as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). This information was given in a notification signed by Deputy Secretary Rahela Rahmat Ullah issued by the Health Education and Family Welfare Department of the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. The notification issued by the Medical Education-1 Branch said, ‘With the approval of His Excellency the President and the Chancellor, BMU Registrar and Professor of the Department of Radiology and Imaging, Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam has been appointed to the vacant post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Bangladesh Medical University as per Section 15(1) of the Bangladesh Medical University Act, 1998. The notification said that the tenure of appointment of Professor Nazrul Islam as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will be four years. He will perform his duties as per Section 15(2) of the Bangladesh Medical University Act, 1998. After the July Uprising, Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam was appointed as the registrar of the university on September 7, 2024. He has also been serving as the head of the Department of Radiology and Imaging since February 18 of this year. Earlier, he joined as an assistant professor in 2003 and was promoted to professor in 2012. Professor Nazrul Islam completed his MBBS from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barisal and obtained his MPhil and MD degrees from the then BSMMU (now BMU). Later, he obtained his FCPS degree from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has published many research papers in the country and abroad. 11 of his research papers have been published in indexed journals. Apart from this, 23 of his research papers have been published in non-indexed journals. Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam is a distinguished radiologist. He is primarily a neuroradiologist. He has earned FCCPS, MD, MPhil degrees in radiology. Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam passed SSC in 1984 and HSC in 1986 under Dhaka Board. He obtained MBBS degree from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College in 1994. During his academic career, he obtained FCPS, MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MPhil degrees. During his teaching career, he has been engaged in teaching as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and currently Professor in Neuro Radiology in the Department of Radiology and Imaging of this university. BMU sources said that Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam has 36 publications, both indexed and non-indexed, in various journals in the country and abroad. He has participated in various training and conferences related to medical services and medical services held in different countries including Bangladesh, Singapore, Germany. A skilled specialist in providing ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan and MRI reports, Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam has worked as a medical officer at Adhunik Sardar Hospital in Habiganj during his career.
