As an important step in ensuring improved and quality healthcare for newborns, a 3-day long “Small and Sick Newborn Service Delivery Package” trainer training workshop is underway at Bangladesh Medical University. Sunday, April 19, 2026, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui attended the ongoing program at the Neonatology Training Room of BMU’s E Block and delivered a valuable speech. In his speech, he expressed the hope that this training initiative of Bangladesh Medical University will act as an important milestone in improving the quality of neonatal healthcare in the country and will make a positive contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Chairman of the Department of Neonatology, said, “This training will create a strong network of trainers, which will ensure the quality expansion of neonatal care at different levels in the country. The decentralized training system will reduce training costs, reduce absenteeism of healthcare providers, increase efficiency at the local level, and significantly improve the quality of neonatal care.” At this time, Dean of the Faculty of Pediatrics Professor Dr. Md. Atiar Rahman, Director of the Directorate of Health (PHC) Dr. Syed Kamrul Islam, teachers of the Neonatology Department, and neonatologists and pediatricians from various medical colleges and institutes were present. 25 respected teachers and doctors are participating in this workshop. The workshop, which started on April 18, will end tomorrow, Monday, April 20, 2026. This training has been organized under the overall guidance of Bangladesh Medical University and with the technical assistance of Japaigo Bangladesh under the neonatal health program of the Directorate of Health. The workshop informed that the main objective of this training is to form a team of skilled master trainers who will later provide training to healthcare providers at the district and Upazila levels. Through this, it will be possible to improve the quality of emergency and integrated services for small and sick newborns, ensure proper clinical management and make an effective contribution to reducing neonatal mortality. Improving the quality of small and sick newborn services is very important to reduce neonatal mortality in Bangladesh. In this context, such training will play a special role in increasing the capacity of health care center-based neonatal services. The participants in the training gained knowledge on various topics such as identification and risk assessment of small and sick newborns, emergency management of newborns, inpatient care and monitoring systems, infection prevention and control, strengthening referral systems, quality improvement and documentation of services, simulation and practical sessions.
