The first-ever Innovation Hub (iHub) Orientation Session was held at Bangladesh Medical University Saturday, April 18, 2026. At the event, speakers expressed their hope to elevate BMU to the best innovation hub in Asia in healthcare and expressed their determination to establish the Innovation Hub or iHub as a powerful platform for positive change in the health sector through research and innovation. The main objective of this event, which was successfully held on Saturday at BMU’s Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Hall, was to further advance innovation-based activities in education, research and health sectors in a more dynamic and effective manner. The keynote speaker of the event was Khandaker A. Mamun, PhD, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, United International University and Founder and Director of Advanced Intelligent Multidisciplinary Systems Lab. He provided important guidance on the establishment of Innovation Hub, artificial intelligence-based transformation and building an effective innovation ecosystem. He also presented the experience of InnoVen Hub established at UIU as a successful and effective model in this regard. His speech was enjoyed by all present and later the event became more attractive with mutual interaction through Q&A. Professor Khandaker A. Mamun, PhD said, the university is the innovation engine. To make innovation successful, continuous efforts have to be made. Even if 1 out of 10 is successful, 9 will be lost. Now is the best time to incubate ideas. Research, innovation, incubation, commercialization should be followed. Currently, more support is needed than funds to implement this process. The university will have a library on one side and an innovation hub along with it. The number of patients, training and higher education facilities at BMU means that new innovation ideas are being created every day. These countless possibilities must be utilized. BMU’s innovation hub will be a wealth of thousands of crores of taka. This BMU will be promoted to the best hub in Asia in the health sector. In the future, through the proper use of AI and the establishment of an innovation hub, the new innovations invented by BMU will be appreciated not only in the country but also worldwide. The chief guest at the event was the Chairperson of the iHub Executive Body, Vice Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of innovation in modern medical education and research and emphasized on building a strong innovation ecosystem. Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui said, data preservation, patient record keeping is a very important issue. Authentic data is a valuable asset in the current era. I hope that by establishing the Innovation Hub using AI technology, BMU will make a great contribution to the innovation-based world in the education, research and health sectors. I-Hub R&D Lead Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur, Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, said, “BMU will be a powerful platform for positive change in the health sector through research and innovation.” The event featured a lively interactive discussion and Q&A session, where the possibilities of innovation, incubation, mentorship and commercialization were discussed in detail. Bangladesh Medical University is working towards developing this Innovation Hub as a “Center of Excellence” in the future, which will play an important role in innovation and research in the country’s health sector. The initiative to establish this hub at the university level has been taken up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, which is being implemented in coordination with the Aspire to Innovate (a2i) program of the Department of Information and Communication Technology. In this context, the iHub-Gi Operational Guideline was sent to Bangladesh Medical University in August 2025 and initial activities were started in the university accordingly. An executive structure has already been formed to manage the activities of the Innovation Hub of Bangladesh Medical University.
