A day-long training workshop for farmers on zinc-rich rice and wheat cultivation has been held in Thakurgaon with the aim of increasing nutrient-rich food production, ensuring nutritional security and building a sustainable agricultural system. A day-long training workshop for farmers on zinc-rich rice and wheat cultivation has been held in Thakurgaon with the aim of increasing nutrient-rich food production, ensuring nutritional security and building a sustainable agricultural system.
The Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO) organized the training at the city’s ESDO head office on Monday (April 13).
The workshop, organized under the ‘Reacts-In’ project under the Harvest Plus program of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), was supported by Canada, World Vision, Nutrition International and McGill University. Fifty farmers from different upazilas of the district participated in the training.
Majedul Islam, Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Extension Department, was present as the trainer. Shahinul Kabir, Project Manager of Reacts-In, Ashraful Alam, Focal Agriculturist of ESDO’s Reacts-In Project, and many others were present.
It discusses in detail the benefits of zinc-rich rice and wheat, modern farming methods, strategies for increasing production, and the importance of zinc in the human body.
The training highlighted strategies to ensure higher yields through the use of improved seeds, proper fertilizer application, disease and pest control, and modern agricultural technology. Farmers were also encouraged to set up and expand field-level exhibitions of zinc rice and wheat.
The organizers said that their main objective is to increase farmers’ awareness and expand nutrient-rich agricultural production through such training, keeping in mind the goal of “improved crops, improved nutrition.
