After the exchange of views, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. FM Siddiqui visited the country’s first state-of-the-art AI-based Robotic Rehabilitation Center set up in the basement of the Super Specialized Hospital. Chairman of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Professor Dr. MA Shakur, gave details about the activities of the Robotic Rehabilitation Center. Honorable Vice Chancellors, Deans, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology, Professor Dr. Syed Akram Hossain, Additional Director of the Super Specialized Hospital, Dr. Md. Shahidul Hasan Babul, Assistant Proctor, Dr. Md. Adnan Hasan Masud, and others were present. During the visit, the Vice Chancellor talked to the patients and inquired about the robotic technology used and closely observed the medical activities. He exchanged views with the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists present and expressed satisfaction with the overall activities of the center. At this time, the Vice Chancellor said, this state-of-the-art robotic center has opened new horizons in the country’s rehabilitation treatment and will play an important role in ensuring better services to patients. It is worth noting that this center, established with the assistance of the Chinese government, is providing treatment to stroke, spinal cord injury and other complex diseases through the latest technology, which will further enrich the country’s medical system. When asked about the activities of the center, BMU’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department Chairman and Robotic Rehabilitation Center Focal Person Professor Dr. MA Shakur said, there are a total of 62 devices here, out of which 57 robots have been installed and 5 physical therapy training beds. Out of the 57 robots, 22 robots are fully artificial intelligence or AI technology-based. These robots will help in the process of ‘neuroplasticity’ or the reconstruction of damaged brain tissue, which is much more effective than conventional physiotherapy. He said that there are ‘Zipu AI-1 and 9’, which are called gait training robots, to restore normal walking ability in stroke or spinal cord injury patients. In addition, ‘Zipu AI-2’ and ‘Zipu AI-3’ will be used to restore the functionality of hands and feet perfectly and provide feedback. There is a multi-joint constant speed training system Zipu AI4 and state-of-the-art robotic technology, which will make patients practice walking very precisely and naturally. Unlike conventional treatment, these robots are capable of providing fatigue-free therapy to the patient for a long time. He also said that the Chinese government has donated robotic equipment worth about 250 million taka to this project. In terms of technology, this center will be one of the most modern robotic rehabilitation centers in South Asia, which is a groundbreaking milestone in the medical sector of Bangladesh. These robots can provide physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation and long-term medical services very precisely according to the patient’s condition. Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur also said that with the launch of the center, Bangladesh has entered a new era in modern technology-based rehabilitation treatment. This is not only a technological advancement for the domestic medical system, but is also becoming a ray of hope in the lives of people suffering from paralysis and long-term illnesses. It is worth noting that 29 doctors and physiotherapists have already been trained under the leadership of a 7-member expert team of biomedical engineers from China for the initial launch of the center. Once the trained manpower gains experience and skills and the necessary activities are successfully completed, the center will be fully launched. This robotic center will benefit patients who are undergoing complex rehabilitation processes including stroke, paralysis, neurological impairment, long-term pain, nerve injury, frozen shoulder, accidental complications or weakness of body parts.
Then the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor participated in a discussion on the theme of Science in Health Services, Protecting All Lives on the occasion of World Health Day at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Center of BMU on Tuesday. The chief guest of the discussion was the Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, MP. The special guest was the Honorable Minister of State for Health, Dr. M. A. Muhith, MP. The Honorable Secretary of the Health Services Department, Mr. Md.
