An awareness billboard titled ‘Bird Sanctuary Paikgachha’ has been installed in Khulna’s Paikgachha to create public awareness about wildlife conservation and stopping indiscriminate bird hunting. This exceptional program was organized by the environmentalist voluntary organization ‘Ban Bibi’ and in collaboration with the upazila administration. This billboard was unveiled on the main road of the market area adjacent to the Gadaipur playground and school on Saturday afternoon, March 4. This initiative is mainly to warn hunters and motivate the general public to protect nature. The billboard highlights various aspects of the Wildlife (Conservation and Protection) Act-2012. It states that hunting, killing, buying and selling or keeping wild animals or birds in cages is a punishable offense. According to the provisions of the law, the crime of killing birds carries a maximum sentence of 2 years in prison and a fine of 2 lakh taka. Present at the installation of the billboard were ‘Ban Bibi’ president, journalist and columnist Prakash Ghosh Bidhan, advocate Shafiqul Islam Kochi, president of Notun Bazar Traders Cooperative Association Ashok Kumar Ghosh, Sheikh Naimur Rahman Apon, environmental activists Kartik Bachar and Ganesh Das, among others. It is worth mentioning that ‘Ban Bibi’ has been working tirelessly in Paikgachha since 2016 with the motto ‘Save Birds, Save Nature’. They have been distributing leaflets and conducting awareness meetings regularly, including installing clay pots and artificial nests on trees in various unions of the upazila, to create safe habitats for birds.
