A woman’s house was illegally entered and vandalized in Naogaon town to demand ransom. Police have arrested a young man accused in the incident and sent him to jail.
The incident took place around 11 am last Thursday. The victim is Daisy Begum, the wife of Helal, an army member serving abroad.
Daisy Begum alleged at a press conference held at a restaurant in the city this morning that the accused youth Rashed lives in Rangpur area. After meeting him on mobile phone, Rashed introduced himself as the son of a DIG. Later, he extorted about 6 million taka from her through bank and mobile banking at different times by offering her a job in a primary school and admission of her child to a cadet college.
Daisy Begum further said that when she asked for the money back, accused Rashed kept threatening her in various ways. At one point, he said, “Your husband lives abroad, you live alone at home – are you asking for death for money? I will kill you one day.”
The victim alleged that on the day of the incident, Rashed suddenly entered her house and demanded another two lakh taka. When she refused to pay the money, he pushed Daisy Begum and her son away and vandalized various furniture in the house, including the TV and refrigerator.
At that time, Daisy Begum came out of the house and shouted to the locals. Her son informed his father about the matter on his mobile phone. Later, Daisy Begum called the national emergency service number 999 and the police arrived at the spot and arrested the accused and took him to the police station.
Daisy Begum has filed a case against Rashed for vandalism, looting and attempted robbery. Rashed, who was arrested in the case, is currently in jail.
Police said an investigation into the incident is underway.
