The tragic end of the life of Azizur Rahman, a daily wage laborer from Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon, has shaken the people of the entire district. Nearly 11 months after he was detained by the BSF while cutting grass at the border, he finally returned home as a dead body.
His body was brought home through the Banglabandha land port in Panchagarh on Friday afternoon (April 3) under government arrangements. Although the body was supposed to be handed over on Friday morning, his relatives received his body at 4 pm.
When Azizur’s body reached his hometown, Shahanabad village in Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon district, the entire area was filled with wailing and mourning from relatives, while Azizur’s wife Taskara repeatedly shouted, “My husband died due to BSF torture. Going to cut grass cannot be a crime.”
An order dated April 2 signed by Sarwar Mohammad Shahriar Khan, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata has taken necessary measures to bring back the body of Azizur Rahman, who died in India on March 22, at government expense. As part of that process, the body was repatriated through the Banglabandha land port.
According to local sources, on the afternoon of May 13, 2025, four people including Azizur Rahman, a day laborer from Shahanabad village in Ranishankail upazila, went to cut grass in the border area. When they reached border pillar 373/1-S, BSF members from India’s 184 Ambari camp chased them. At that time, the three escaped, but Azizur Rahman was caught.
Azizur’s wife Taskara Begum alleged, “My husband was wrongfully captured and tortured by BSF members. Due to the torture, he became seriously ill. After being under treatment in India for 11 months, he died on March 22 in a hospital in Islampur, India. We came to know this tragic news through relatives in India.”
In this regard, Lieutenant Colonel Tanzir Ahmed, Commander (CO) of Thakurgaon 50 BGB Battalion, said, “After bringing the body to the country, the body has been handed over to the family after completing the legal process. We will take a stricter stance to ensure the safety of the common people in the border area. At the same time, to keep ourselves safe, we prohibit the people of the border from going to the barbed wire fence and the no-man’s land area of the border.”
Local UP Chairman Abul Kashem said that after the legal process was completed, the body was returned to the family and the burial was completed that night. As the body had started to deteriorate, it was no longer possible to store it, so arrangements were made for a quick burial.
The incident has cast a shadow of anger and grief among the locals and raised questions about security in the minds of the people of the border. There are necessary legal measures for any incident on the border. Therefore, the border residents of Thakurgaon are reluctant to accept the fact that someone will have to return dead.
