National Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Day 2025 was celebrated under the initiative of Bangladesh Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with the theme “Integrated Rehabilitation Requires Collective Effort”. The day’s program began with a colorful rally at the Battala premises of Bangladesh Medical University on Thursday, November 13, 2025. The rally was inaugurated by BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Shaheed Dr. Milon Hall of Bangladesh Medical University. The event, chaired by the President of the Society, Professor Dr. Md. Taslim Uddin, was attended as special guests by Bangladesh Cricket Board President Aminul Islam Bulbul, BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Vice President of the Society Professor Dr. M. A. Shakur, Treasurer of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh Dr. Mehedi Hasan, BMU Proctor Dr. Sheikh Farhad, Assistant Proctor Dr. Md. Ershad Ahsan Sohel, Deputy Director of the Hospital Dr. Abu Naser, among others.
Emphasizing on integrated initiatives, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader said, today’s National Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Day’s theme ‘Integrated Rehabilitation, Collective Effort’ is very timely. Currently, the number of people suffering from stroke, accident, arthritis and spinal injury is increasing rapidly. In these cases, medicine or surgery is not enough, physical medicine and rehabilitation are essential to return the patient to normal life. Bangladesh Medical University has already established the country’s first Robotic Rehabilitation Center, which has ushered in a new era of technology in rehabilitation treatment. Patients are recovering faster and more effectively through modern robotic therapy.
Expressing gratitude to the medical community, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Aminul Islam Bulbul said, “The hard work and research you (doctors) do for the survival of people is commendable. The physical and mental aspects are very important in playing cricket. If a player wants to perform well, we need your help for physical maintenance.” Our runs may count, but those of you who work for our well-being, your performance does not count. When we are sick, we only take care of ourselves. But we are very grateful to you for your hard work, your technicality.
In his speech, Professor Dr. Md. Taslim Uddin said, “I express my sincere gratitude to all the members of the Bangladesh Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the distinguished guests from various institutions. Your collective participation and cooperation are the motivation for our efforts. We believe that it is possible to build a strong and humane rehabilitation system in Bangladesh through collective efforts. We always think that ‘Disability does not mean disabled’. It is actually ‘Different Ability’. If we can add some capabilities to their limitations, their disabilities are greatly reduced. With the help of physical medicine and rehabilitation, capabilities give people new strength, new skills and a new light of hope.”Professor Dr. MA Shakur, Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at BMU and Vice-President of the Society, said, “I believe that this initiative of the Bangladesh Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will further increase public awareness in the society and further strengthen the joint efforts of the government, institutions and the people in rehabilitation treatment.” In this program held under the direction of Associate Professor Dr. A. K. Azad, General Secretary of Bangladesh Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, other speakers highlighted the importance of physical medicine and rehabilitation and said that it is necessary to further strengthen the physical medicine and rehabilitation unit in every government and private hospital in the country. It is important to appoint adequately trained rehabilitation manpower, increase public awareness, enforce existing laws, and increase activity in implementing new laws and policies. The government, various ministries, district and upazila administrations, NGOs and civil society should work together and take joint initiatives to improve the quality of rehabilitation treatment and services. Along with this, they also highlighted the importance of creating a disability-friendly environment in schools, colleges, workplaces, roads and transport, including universal design standards.
